Esperanza Spalding Wins 2016 MOBO Award for Best Jazz Act

Ceremony to take place Nov. 4

By Carolina Worrell

Grammy Award-winning bassist-singer Esperanza Spalding has won the MOBO (Music of Black Origin) Award for Best Jazz Act, beating out such contemporary jazz artists as Snarky Puppy’s Cory Henry and Bill Laurance, as well as British singer Jacob Collier and bassist Michael Janisch.

Now in its 21st year, the MOBO Awards is “a celebration of top musical and cultural achievements,” according to a press release. And Spalding, with seven collaborative and five solo albums behind her, “has resolutely, intuitively, deftly expanded upon both her art and herself as a world-renowned genre-building composer, bassist and vocalist.”

Spalding will be honored at the 2016 MOBO Awards in Glasgow, Scotland on Nov. 4. For more information, visit mobo.com.
