WAYNE SHORTER QUARTET, GARBAREK/GURTU AND MCA POWER TRIO FOR 2016 EFG LONDON JAZZ FESTIVAL

The first names have been announced for this year’s EFG London Jazz Festival, which takes place over 10 days from 11 to 20 November, and includes a rare UK appearance from sax giant Wayne Shorter with his celebrated Quartet on the closing night at the Barbican on 20 November. Shorter recently appeared in London with trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra for a spirited concert featuring new arrangements of choice selections from his classic 1960s Blue Note albums, whereas his Quartet of pianist Danilo Pérez, bassist John Patitucci and drummer Brian Blade are all about edge of the seat improv and in-the-moment takes on the saxophonist’s totemic compositions.

Several collaborative concerts are also among the first tranche of names including a debut London appearance of the MCA Power Trio featuring storming saxophonist David Murray, Grammy-winning drummer Terri Lyne Carrington and acclaimed pianist Geri Allen (19 Nov, Cadogan Hall); celebrated Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek appears with his band featuring highly respected Indian percussionist Trilok Gurtu (13 Nov, Royal Festival Hall), while consistently questing pianist Brad Mehldau hooks up in a duo with Nonesuch labelmate and longtime collaborator Joshua Redman (12 Nov, Barbican). Norwegian piano star Tord Gustavsen brings his new trio of singer Simin Tander and drummer Jarle Vespestad to the 600-seater Milton Court Theatre for both matinee and evening concerts (12 Nov), while The Bad Plus get ready to rock The Scala, Kings Cross (13 Nov).

Bass boss and LJF regular Dave Holland returns with a heavyweight new quartet of sax demon Chris Potter, lauded Benin-born guitarist Lionel Loueke and top US drummer Eric Harland for a potentially explosive gig at Cadogan Hall (15 Nov), which is preceded by US soul-jazz singer Lizz Wright who performs music from her latest album Freedom & Surrender (12 Nov, Cadogan Hall). All these shows will be on sale from 18 March onwards. The festival, with Jazzwise as media partner, is in its 24th year and encompasses a huge range of concert halls, jazz clubs and free performance spaces across the capital with last year’s programme including over 300 live shows.
