Diana Krall, Snarky Puppy and a reunited Steps Ahead for 41st North Sea Jazz Fest
The first names for this year’s North Sea Jazz Festival, the world’s largest music event, which will take place between the 8-10 July. Among them are Grammy-winning Brooklyn groove merchants Snarky Puppy, soulful jazz singer Gregory Porter and Canadian vocalist-pianist Diana Krall. Also appearing are reunited fusion pioneers Steps Ahead, featuring founding member/vibist Mike Mainieri plus Brazilian jazz piano star Eliane Elias, saxophonist Donny McCaslin (of recent Bowie Blackstar acclaim), bass maestro Marc Johnson and powerful drummer Billy Kilson. Further names so far confirmed include Grammy-nominated US trumpeter Christian Scott eTunde Adjuah with his acclaimed Stretch Music Project, plus a celebratory performance from Chick Corea. There’s also the usual crossover-section of artists appearing such as soul-pop veterans Simply Red and Level 42, R&B star Jill Scott and blues legend Buddy Guy. This will be the festival’s 41st anniversary – its inaugural year saw performances by Sarah Vaughan, Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie and Stan Getz – it now sports some 150 performances on 13 stages attracting around 25,000 people each day.
