RIP Don Rendell

Tributes are pouring in to Don Rendell who has died at the age of 89. The saxophonist, flautist and clarinettist who began his jazz career as a teenager, later joining the Oscar Rabin band and the Dankworth Seven, was influenced by Lester Young and later John Coltrane.

Tweets about Don Rendell

Born in Plymouth Rendell went on to work with Ronnie Ross, Tony Crombie and Ted Heath in the 1950s and toured with Stan Kenton.

But he’s best known for his co-leadership of the pioneering Rendell-Carr Quintet which was founded in 1963.

Rendell died on Tuesday this week after a short illness.
