Anthony Braxton/Tri-Centric in Amsterdam June 2 - 7
(Published: April 24, 2015)

Doek meets Tri-Centric: Improvisation & Composition
June 2-7, 2015
Bimhuis, Zaal 100 and other Amsterdam venues

From June 2 to June 7 in Amsterdam, the DOEK collective and Anthony Braxton's Tri-Centric, two musician-run organizations which champion adventurous trans-idiomatic music, will join forces for the first time to produce a festival of six continuous days of performances, gathering musicians from both sides of the Atlantic. The festival will celebrate the June milestone birthdays of two masters, Anthony Braxton (turning 70 on June 4th) and Misha Mengelberg (80 on June 5th), but also celebrate the next generation of creative artists, with premiere compositions by many members of the two organizations including Eric Boeren, Taylor Ho Bynum, Kaja Draksler, James Fei, Ingrid Laubrock, Michael Moore and Carl Testa. Over the first five days of the festival, at Zaal 100 and the Bimhuis, twenty musicians (ten from each organization) will form a community of artists that will perform in shifting configurations each evening – exploring the evolving borders of composition, improvisation, and intuition.

The first two days of the festival, June 2 and 3, will start with open rehearsals during the day at Zaal 100 (http://zaal100.nl/) followed by concerts in the evening. Anthony Braxton himself will be giving a rare talk on June 2 at the Central Public Library. On June 4, the performance moves to the Bimhuis (http://bimhuis.nl/home) for an evening-long musical celebration of Anthony Braxton’s birthday. The Anthony Braxton 10tet will perform, followed by a 20-piece large-ensemble featuring the full compliment of DOEK and Tri-Centric participants. The performances continue at the Bimhuis on June 5 with premieres from musicians in both organizations. Misha Mengelberg's birthday on June 6 will feature his works performed by musicians from both organizations as well as more premieres. The festival closes on June 7 with a bike tour and a closing party. (Full night-by-night details below.)

6-day festival passes are available for €55 at the Doek website http://www.doek.org/festi... (PayPal only). Single day advance tickets are available for Bimhuis events on June 4, 5, 6 at the Bimhuis website http://bimhuis.com/home. Same day tickets are available at the door each evening.

For all inquiries, please contact Carolyn Muntz by email at info@doek.org or by phone +31 6 54295950.

DOEK FESTIVAL # 13

Antony BraxtonTri-Centric Foundation and Doek
The music and legacy of Anthony Braxton

June 2-7, 2015
Bimhuis and other Amsterdam venues

The Doek festival has developed over the years into a significant event for improvised music. For the next edition, we’re collaborating with the Tri-Centric Foundation to present the music of one of the greatest living composers and improvisers, Anthony Braxton.

Musicians from Tri-Centric who will be joining include Taylor Ho Bynum, Vincent Chancey, Nate Wooley, Ingrid Laubrock, Mary Halverson, James Fey, Brendon Seabrook, Tomeka Reid, and Anthony Braxton himself. Together with ten Doek musicians, they will form a large ensemble to present one of Braxton’s large-scale works.

The festival will also include compositions/improvisations by various members of both Tri-Centric and Doek, small ensemble workshops and performances, as well as interviews and talks.
