Last year the jazz world lost the great Pharoah Sanders, one of the true innovators in music since the 1960s. Thankfully his music lives on, as on this live 1980 recording from “Fabrik” in Hamburg-Altona, where he is in top form with drummer Idris Muhammad, John Hicks on piano and Curtis Lundy on bass. A wonderful journey through spiritual jazz, as only Pharoah knew how. Accompanied by his long-time band, The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra, he returns to deliver sheer joy with his idiosyncratic take on a collection of standards that, for Jeff, are amongst the best songs ever written. The late Jessye Norman described Salvant as“a unique voice supported by an intelligence and full-fledged musicality, which light up every note she sings”.
