When I went to music school in East Texas, on one of my first days there, I could hear some guys down the hall playing jazz in the rehearsal room. I was already into jazz, but this was my first chance to see people playing it. I was in awe as I watched the piano player, he later became a very good friend. The bass player was Gary Willis, who went on to be a very well known fusion player.

I saw my very first live jazz gig being an University student (and already a passionate heavy rock fan). It was a solo concert of great sax player Vladimir Chekasin (a member of renown avant-garde jazz Ganelin trio) where he played against analog electronic device, kind of oscillograph, in overcrowded University Great Aula. I was absolutely shocked, and since that time a started visiting live jazz gigs more and more often. It took few decades though till I accepted jazz on recordings, not played live.

Sometimes I see Vladimir walking in town, but he doesn't play often nowadays
