Kevin Mahogany, a singer who made a great impact in the 1990s with a rich, soulful baritone sound evocative of Joe Williams and Johnny Hartman, has died, per a report in the Kansas City Star. He was 59.

Mahogany recorded as a leader for prominent labels including Enja, Warner Bros. and Telarc, and taught at the University of Miami and Berklee College of Music. He also appeared as Big Joe Turner in Robert Altman’s film Kansas City, and toured with Kurt Elling, Jon Hendricks and Mark Murphy as the Four Brothers.

A full obituary will appear soon at JazzTimes.com
