"Crystal Clear" is the first movement from "Suite Theory", Micah Bethea's latest big band extravaganza. This is an excellent video of the actual live performance on the CD.

More modern avant-garde jazz from the prolific Matthew Shipp, this time in a quartet format. As always, a cut above the others:

Brad Mehldau performs some Bach pieces and then performs some originals based on Bach. This is not cute 1950s style 3rd stream ditties. Instead, like Mehldau's best work, this is deep listening, mesmerizing and almost hypnotic. Brad extracts the essence of Bach, but still ends up sounding like himself.

If you put the pianistics of Thelonious Monk, Elton John, Matthew Shipp and Keith Emerson in a blender you might end up with what we hear from Elliot Galvin on his new release. An equally creative rhythm section and an occasional use of electronics only add to the mix. One of the more interesting albums to come out so far this year.
