Trane-spotters rejoice: the Grammy Museum will host a long-term exhibit celebrating the music of jazz great John Coltrane

Opening to the public next month, the exhibit, entitled Chasing Trane: John Coltrane's Musical Journey Transcended, will trace the sax virtuoso and composer’s career with rare performance footage and audio recordings, handwritten manuscripts, instruments and more.

Presented by Bulova, Chasing Trane will open Nov. 17 and go on display through Sept. 2018 in the Museum's Mike Curb Gallery on the fourth floor.

The project coincides with the home video and soundtrack release for John Scheinfeld's celebrated feature documentaryChasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary (due Nov. 17 via UMe).

Born Sept. 23, 1926 in Hamlet, N.C., Coltrane played with Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk during their late-‘50s heydays, before quickly moving into more angular musical experiments. Before his untimely death at age 40 (on July 17, 1967), the peerless musician would release a staggering 38 records, including the iconic A Love Supreme.

"John Coltrane is a towering figure in the history of music. We are thrilled to honor his creative legacy in conjunction with John Scheinfeld's superb documentary," comments Grammy Museum executive director Scott Goldman in a statement.

Grammy Museum curator Nwaka Onwusa added, "We are excited to share the story of John Coltrane's remarkable career, specifically the years 1965 to 1967. As Coltrane's career progressed during these final years, his music took on an increasingly revolutionary dimension. This exhibit will highlight that special time in his life."

On opening night, the Grammy Museum will host a screening of doco in the Clive Davis Theater, followed by a conversation with Scheinfeld. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased by Grammy Museum members and American Express cardholders from Oct. 19. Visit www.grammymuseum.org for more.
