The arts and music presenter Ars Nova Workshop, in partnership with FringeArts, has announced the finalized lineup for the October Revolution of Jazz & Contemporary Music to be held in Philadelphia, Pa. on October 5-8, 2017. Among the artists slated to appear are: Anthony Braxton; Sun Ra Arkestra; Art Ensemble of Chicago; Tim Berne’s Snakeoil; Mike Reed’s Flesh & Bone; and many others.

The festival was inspired by Bill Dixon’s DIY jazz festival – The October Revolution in Jazz – produced in 1964 in New York City.  That event featured many of the artists who have been presented by Ars Nova over the years, including Dixon, Burton Greene, Paul  Bley and Sun Ra.

In a press release received at JT, Ars Nova executive director Mark Christman said, “In this kind of landscape, in which music of all kinds can play a central role, the participants do not listen for something.” He added, “They are focusing instead on the experience of listening itself—tuning in.”

The festival will be held at FringeArts’ waterfront headquarters, as well as at several other venues in the area, including the Race Street Pier, Christ Church Neighborhood House, and the Christ Church Sanctuary.
