Boomtown is always expanding its musical horizons and this year is no different as the multi genre festival explores one of most influential musical styles on the planet, by putting jazz at the forefront of the main stage for Whistlers Green. The Windmill Stage will feature not one, but four Mercury Prize nominees on this year’s line up, reflecting just how strong the scene is right now. Whistlers Green, provides the perfect platform for a cream of young UK talents to push the boundaries of traditional jazz.

Opening The Windmill on Thursday is one of the most renowned DJ’s, BBC6 Music’s Gilles Peterson who will be showcasing his extensive record collection in a set to excite each generation with selections varying from jazz to world, afrobeat and beyond. Loop pedal extraordinaire Dub FX will be taking live improvisation to new strengths with a beatboxing, horn layering, vocal enhancing journey to entertain the eyes and ears. Pioneering dub poet, writer, social commentator and music maker Benjamin Zephaniah will be serving a unique blend of truth music guaranteed to give food for thought alongside his Revolutionary Minds band.

Portico Quartet having previously released on Real World Records and Ninja Tune return with their own strand of atmospheric music, flirting with the experimental as a four string ensemble. Manchester group GoGo Penguin intersect minimalist jazz piano riffs with breakbeat basslines, Soweto Kinch’s carefully arranged horns bridge the gap between jazz and hip hop whilst The Comet Is Coming incorporate psychedelic rock with infectious jazz riffs and electronica resulting in a set hard to stand still to.

All female septet Nérija draw influence from South Africa, West Africa, the Caribbean and UK resulting in a sound that reflects the rich cultural backgrounds on London jazz. Brazilian Nomad Orchestra bring ten of the country’s most daring musicians to share their strand of ethio-groove, afrobeat with hip hop infused dub undertones.

Cuban/Iranian quartet Ariwo create a soundscape of hypnotic polyrhythms intersected with live instrumentation encapsulating traditional Tehran/Cuban sounds in modern jazz and Jesse Royal’s authentic sounds of Jamaican folk represent the many strands of reggae revival artists through the festival.

Floating Lotus, representing the up and coming talent in R&B, soul and funk, takes all those who stumble upon it to an enclosure of grassroots beginnings, where the spotlight shines on those on the brink of stardom. This intimate venue gives artists a space to be known, home to Cardiff harmonisers, Baby Queens, acoustic Bristol trip hop triad Elder Island and the smooth vocals of Anjelo Disons to name but a few.

Over at the Sandcastle Stage those in Kidztown can enjoy their very own PG rated stage, bursting with fun, high quality music from around the rest of the festival. From Sam & The Womp’s high energy, electro swing inspired gypsy funk to Kid Carpet’s hip hop esque disco punk, Beans on Toast’s fantastically ranting folk to parodic chap hop from Mr B The Gentleman Rhymer – this stage is specifically catered for kids as well as their adults. Featuring a host of new cafes, chill-out areas, activities, workshops and education spaces, this area offers a family-friendly haven to enjoy some relaxation, pass on skills and learn all kinds of new ones.

See here for previously announced districts, with more artists yet be revealed from Sector 6, Old Town, Barrio Loco, Mayfair, Bang Hai and DSTRKT 5…
