MAJOR FRENCH AWARDS FOR ANDY SHEPPARD AND AVISHAI COHEN
France’s Académie du Jazz – an important cultural organisation since 1955 – presented awards to two ECM artists last weekend.

Israeli trumpeter Avishai Cohen received the Grand Prix de l’Académie du Jazz for Best Record of the Year for his ECM leader debut Into The Silence (Avishai Cohen could not receive his award personally but sent a video message from India instead).

And British saxophonist Andy Sheppard received the Prix du Musicien Européen, the European Musician Prize given for “work and recent activities”. Sheppard’s recent activities have included tours with his quartet with Michel Benita, Seb Rochford and Eivind Aarset (see the album Surrounded by Sea) and ongoing work in the trio Carla Bley/Andy Sheppard/Steve Swallow (see Andando el Tiempo).
