Jazz takes centre stage in new movie La La Land

Damien Chazelle, the talented young writer and director behind ‘Whiplash’, is back with a second movie centred around a jazz musician – and it’s already generating Oscar-buzz. In this case, Sebastian is a pianist played by Ryan Gosling who’s trying to follow his dreams in Los Angeles, with aspirations to open his own jazz bar. He’s studied the great players like Monk and Brubeck but is frustrated playing cheesy Christmas songs in a restaurant and eighties pop covers at pool parties. John Legend makes an appearance as a gifted jazz guitarist who’s moved his music into the mainstream, advising Sebastian to do the same.

Gosling stars opposite a young actress, played by Emma Stone, who also has to compromise to make a career. They have a shared love of classic movies and this is reflected in Chazelle’s direction – with obvious nods to ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ and ‘Rebel Without a Cause’. The film was shot in classic CinemaScope and moves as easily between speech and music as between real life and fantasy sequences.

The soundtrack is composed by Justin Hurwitz who also worked with Chazelle on Oscar-winning ‘Whiplash’ (the two friends were roommates at Harvard). Ryan Gosling is understood to have learned all the piano pieces by rote ahead of the shoot.

This week, ‘La La Land’ leads the Golden Globe nominations with 7, including Best Picture.

Damien Chazelle joins Nigel Williams to talk all things jazz on his Saturday morning programme on December 17th at 10am.

‘La La Land’ gets its full UK release on January 12th 2017.

Poor Brits, they will be able to watch the move only after two weeks....   Here on continent it was available for public from early December, I watched it early today - great movie for Christmas/New Year eves time

Ryan Gosling is great as usual, Emma Stone is excellent and extremely non-Californian what makes this generally neo-classical Hollywood musical looking quite fresh, non-boring and surprisingly actual in the world which for the first time for half of a century turning back to its roots (for good or bad). Lot of nice music too. Gosling doesn't look as genuine piano player at all but it doesn't destroy the movie.

BTW, here in my home country the title of the movie is "California Dreams" ....

According to the first post, Gosling does play the piano parts, I wouldn't know for sure though.
Nice to see a jazz movie that isn't about drug addiction for a change.

Yeh, Gosling plays piano/keys himself and he doesn't sound/looks like true jazz piano player doing that - what I wanted to say LOL  It works quite well when in movie but I seriously doubt about attractiveness of its OST as separate CD though Embarrassed

and yes - movie in whole and jazz musicians/music as part leave  very positive feel, something more usual for musicals from 70s but obscure today

The 'drug addicted jazz musician' is a movie cliche that we have seen too many times.

JANUARY 8, 2017 | 05:14PM PT

La La Land” dominated Sunday’s Golden Globes, winning a record-breaking seven statues including best musical or comedy. The ode to Los Angeles and vintage musicals also won best screenplay and director honors for Damien Chazelle, the 31-year old director who dared to make an un-ironic throwback to the films of Vincente Minnelli and Jacques Demy, as well as picking up acting statues for Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in the musical or comedy category.
