They played together sometimes, and also led their own bands.
Another good one is Ornette Coleman's Prime Time Band.

Yes, lots and lots. First you might want to look at Blood Ulmer and Ronald Shannon Jackson.
Power Tools was a short lived, but excellent modern fusion band with Jackson on drums.
