Jazztopad Festival Brings Polish Jazz to U.S. for Second Year

Obara International Quartet, Piotr Damasiewicz, Marcin Wasilewski and more

By Carolina Worrell

In collaboration with the Polish Cultural Institute New York, a special edition of Wrocław’s Jazztopad Festival will take place in the United States this summer. From June 19 – July 1, leading Polish jazz ensembles the Piotr Damasiewicz Quintet, the Marcin Wasilewski Trio, the Obara International Quartet and the Lutosławski Quartet will perform in New Haven, New York, Washington, D.C., and Bolton Landing, N.Y. Also joining this year’s musicians are previous Jazztopad guests Tony Malaby and Uri Caine.

This series constitutes the first large-scale presentation of Polish jazz to take place in the U.S. For 12 years, Wroclaw’s Jazztopad Festival has commissioned works that often push the boundaries of genre and combine jazz with classical music. The festival collaborates with events all over the world, including Korea’s Jarasum International Jazz Festival, Japan’s Tokyo Jazz Festival, Turkey’s Akbank Jazz Festival and, as of last year, Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York.

“The American edition of Jazztopad Festival will be above all an opportunity to discover the most important artists from the Polish contemporary jazz scene,” said Piotr Turkiewicz, artistic director of the festival, in a press release. “Jazztopad Festival presents, apart from regular concerts, special projects and commissions, as well as concerts in private apartments. I am happy we have been able to transfer these specific elements of our festival across the Atlantic Ocean.”
