Pat Metheny announces world tour with Simcock, Oh, Sanchez Quartet

Revered guitarist Pat Metheny has announced a 34-date world tour with his much-talked about new Quartet featuring two rising stars of the international scene – multi-award winning British pianist Gwilym Simcock and acclaimed Malaysian-born, US resident bassist Linda Oh – and longtime drummer/composer Antonio Sanchez. The group is Metheny’s first to feature an acoustic piano trio since working with Brad Mehldau nearly 10 years ago, and sees the maestro moving on to new sonic territory from the fiery sax-driven Unity Group with Chris Potter.

Oh and Simcock have been making waves respectively with projects that include the bassist’s work with the likes of Lee Konitz, Dave Douglas, Joe Lovano, Kenny Barron, John Scofield and Steve Coleman among others, while Simcock’s prolific work rate has included his own solo, trio and large ensemble albums as well as extensive tours with Dave Holland, Kenny Wheeler, Lee Konitz, Bill Bruford’s Earthworks, Bob Mintzer and Bobby McFerrin and also co-leading Anglo-American super-group The Impossible Gentlemen. Acclaimed drummer Sanchez has worked extensively with Metheny since 1997 – recording two albums with the guitarist’s Group, the first, Speaking of Now winning a Grammy Award in 2003, before going on to record a further five albums with Metheny. He also composed the soundtrack to the 2014 black comedy, Birdman, which received both BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations. While there’s no official word on new material or planned recordings from Metheny’s latest Quartet, there’s a distinct possibility that such a strong group of composers will inspire new collaborative works.

The Quartet visit the UK for a four-night run of gigs at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club from 29 June to 2 July, with the rest of the dates so far announced including:
Ronnie Scott's, London (29 June – 2 July); Copenhagen Jazz Festival, Denmark (4 July); tbc (5 July); and Kongsberg Jazz Festival, Norway (6 July). Please note these dates have been amended while the first part of the tour is confirmed - this article will be updated as soon as further dates are announced.
