Indonesian jazz pianist, Sri "Aga" Hanuraga strikes gold with his new album, “To The Universe.” This sizzling session finds him in a quartet format, with European musicians, Mattia Magatelli (double bass/electric bass), Kristijan Krajncan (drums) and Rodrigo Parejo Mateos (flute).
The album is a collection of shimmering original tunes, as well as several reharmonized folk songs, ingeniously rearranged into challenging jazz compositions. Recorded in Amsterdam, "To The Universe" is a profound musical statement -- showcasing the extraordinary stylings of this young phenom in a setting which is equally ambitious and profound as it is warm and intimate. Hanuraga almost routinely pushes proceedings into the stratosphere, with a fresh vision for his instrument which embraces the traditions of some of jazz's most noted piano pioneers while still striving to seek out uncharted destinations.
An emerging Indonesian talent -- versatile and gifted, on both acoustic piano and electric keyboards --Sri Hanuraga is comfortably at home in a variety of genres, including jazz, ethno-jazz, fusion and progressive rock. Rarely is such a level of mastery on the instrument and an advanced knowledge of music theory found in a musician so relatively young. (He is in his late twenties.)
Sri Hanuraga has performed all around Indonesia, throughout Southeast Asia and Europe (Holland, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Hungary, Romania, France, Monaco).
"To The Universe" is a powerful, groundbreaking album, signaling the arrival of a vital new voice on jazz piano and keyboards. It is a magnificent work, full of flamboyant technical brilliance -- not for the sake of putting Aga's considerable monstrous chops on display, but simply as a net result of pushing himself and his music to new heights! | | |
