Sánchez, Patitucci, Martinez To Headline Dominican Republic Jazz Fest
Posted 10/29/2015

Saxophonist David Sánchez, bassist John Patitucci and percussionist Pedrito Martinez are among the headliners for the 19th Dominican Republic Jazz Festival, a free event that will take place Nov. 4–8 in the towns of Santiago, Sosúa, Puerto Plata and Cabarete in the Dominican Republic.

Presented by FEDUJAZZ and the Dominican Ministry of Tourism, it’s the longest-running jazz festival in the Dominican Republic.

Joining the Artistic Advisory Board for the festival this year are Matt Marvuglio, dean of the performance division at Berklee College of Music, and Marco Pignataro, managing director of the Berklee Global Jazz Institute. Marvuglio and Pignataro will also serve as advisors to FEDUJAZZ, the education foundation that provides free music education for youth of the Dominican Republic.

Since its inception, the Dominican Republic Jazz Festival has presented internationally renowned Latin Grammy and Grammy Award-winning musicians, including Ignacio Berroa, Chuck Mangione, Ray Baretto, Néstor Torres, Chucho Valdés, Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez and Arturo Sandoval.

Joe Lovano, this year’s winner of the Tenor Saxophone category of the DownBeat Critics Poll, headlined last year’s festival.

Notable acts for the 19th edition include the Big Band Conservatory of Santo Domingo and the Student Loan String Band on Nov. 4; pianist Roy Assaf on Nov. 5; and the Berklee Global Jazz Institute on Nov. 6.

Sánchez’s concert will take place at 8 p.m. on Nov. 6, and Patitucci will perform at the same time on Nov. 7. Martinez will close out the event on Nov. 8 at Cabarete Beach.

The festival is free, but VIP tickets are available, providing fans with priority seating, complimentary beverages and other festival perks (with the proceeds benefiting FEDUJAZZ).
