Jazz heavyweights Pat Metheny, Jan Garbarek and Gary Burton are set to feature on a special live album, Hommage á Eberhard Weber, featuring music drawn from two concerts celebrating the 75th birthday of the renowned German bassist from January this year. Released on ECM on 11 September, the album also features bassist Scott Colley, drummer Danny Gottlieb, saxophonist Paul McCandless and the SWR Big Band on a wide range of music by and inspired by Weber.

Since the bassist suffered a stroke in 2007 he has not been able to perform live, so Garbarek (whose groups Weber performed with between 1982 and 2007) opens the concert with some powerful sax work over Weber’s haunting pre-recorded loops. The centrepiece of the album is Metheny’s ‘Hommage’ that orchestrates several Weber solo bass improvisations – based on filmed performances of them – which were edited together into a new long-form piece. The film was projected behind the band as they performed the music live to create what Metheny has described as “visual sampling”. The concert also features top US vibist Burton and saxophonist McCandless on newly arranged big band versions of Weber pieces such as ‘Touch’, ‘Maurizius’, ‘Tübingen’ and ‘Notes After An Evening’. Weber himself was at the concert and introduced some of the music.

This album is one of five new releases from ECM, which includes a solo jazz violin set Time Before And Time After by Dominique Pifarély; the Italian Stefano Battaglia Trio’s In The Morning; renowned lyra player Sokratis Sinopoulos Quartet's Eight Winds and top Italian trumpeter Enrico Rava’s Wild Dance featuring his Quartet with guest trombonist Gianluca Petrella. All of these albums are set for release on 28 August.
