Robert Glasper Takes Cover: New Album and UK Tour Dates

Genre-mashing keyboardist and one of the hottest properties of the past decade, Robert Glasper returns to his piano trio roots when he releases a new album Covered on 15 June on Blue Note. Recorded with his original trio of bassist Vicente Archer and drummer Damion Reid, who played with Glasper on his first two Blue Note albums, Canvas and In My Element, the album was tracked live at the famous Capitol Studios in Hollywood and features newly composed material alongside interpretations of tunes by Radiohead, Joni Mitchell, John Legend and a co-write with legendary singer and activist Harry Belafonte.

Glasper, who has recently signed an exclusive deal to play Steinway pianos, took his trio into New York’s revered Village Vanguard for a week in late February and has also composed music for the forthcoming bio-pic of Miles Davis, Miles Ahead, which is directed by and stars actor Don Cheadle. Following the release of Covered, his seventh album, the Glasper Trio hit the UK in August for dates at Royal Northern College Of Music in Manchester (8 Aug); Brecon Jazz Festival, Wales (9 Aug), The Hub, Edinburgh as part of the Edinburgh Festival (10 Aug) and a much-anticipated return to Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, London for three nights 12-14 August.

Album features 4th Dimension band

By JazzTimes

Guitarist John McLaughlin will release a new album, Black Light, this fall, with his 4th Dimension band. The album will include eight original McLaughlin compositions, including, according to a press release, “ an homage to his departed colleague and collaborator, Paco De Lucia, with whom McLaughlin had reportedly intended to compose an album’s worth of new material just before De Lucia’s passing.” The tribute, titled “El Hombre Que Sabia, features McLaughlin on acoustic guitar.”

The 4th Dimension is composed of Gary Husband on keyboards and drums, Etienne Mbappe on electric bass, and drummer Ranjit Barot. The release will be followed by a world tour.

George Freeman-Chico Freeman new CD!
(Published: May 20, 2015)

George Freeman-Chico Freeman
All In The Family

SOUTHPORT RECORDS - A NEW RELEASE
STREET DATE: JUNE 30, 2015

"All In The Family" brings together two members of Chicago's Freeman family that have never been recorded together until now: legendary guitarist George Freeman (who celebrated his 88th birthday on April 10th, 2015) and world-renowned saxophonist Chico Freeman (George's nephew and Von Freeman's son.) Together, they present their musical legacy of Chicago Jazz! Certainly, the late, great leader of the family, tenor saxophonist Von Freeman is smiling somewhere today!

All of the tracks are original songs (with the exception of the haunting "Angel Eyes") and feature compositions from George Freeman "My Scenery" and "Vonski"; and from Chico Freeman "Latina Bonita" and "Essence of Silence"; along with several short Improvisations that provide a compelling flow to the recording. "Five Days in May" features Reto Weber on the 'hang' - a track that should have everyone up and dancing with joy!

A lifetime of music, from playing with Charlie Parker to Gene Ammons and his many fine recordings, George Freeman was recently selected as Chicagoan of the Year in Jazz by Chicago Tribune Arts Critic Howard Reich! Chico Freeman's career has taken him from his early years with Chicago's AACM to Earth, Wind and Fire to producing, performing and recording with legendary musicians in New York, including Elvin Jones, to today's International Jazz Festivals.

Musicians featured on the recording are: George Freeman, guitar; Chico Freeman, tenor and soprano saxophones; Kirk Brown, piano; Harrison Bankhead, bass; Hamid Drake, drums; Mike Allemana, guitar; Joe Jenkins, drums; and special guest Reto Weber, hang and percussion.

Produced by Joanie Pallatto & Bradley Parker-Sparrow.
Recorded in September of 2014 at Sparrow Sound Design Recording Studio, Chicago, IL
Liner Notes - Neil Tesser

New Bob Mintzer Big Band CD, "Get Up!," Due from MCG Jazz June 23

Since 1983, tenor saxophonist, composer, and arranger Bob Mintzer has been delving into the big band format and its myriad stylistic possibilities, collecting five Grammy nominations and one Grammy win in the process. His newest recording, Get Up!, which is his 20th big band album to date, will be released by MCG Jazz on June 23.

Mintzer describes the nine tracks on the new CD as "clearly R&B influenced, but [they] then go to many other places along the way. ... Using these relatively simple tunes as a springboard for harmonic, rhythmic, and melodic exploration was a real adventure, one that I had been thinking about for a long time."

Produced by MCG's Marty Ashby and arranged by Mintzer, Get Up! features guitarist Ray Obiedo and bassist Will Lee, as well as Mintzer's longtime colleagues in the Yellowjackets, pianist Russell Ferrante and drummer William Kennedy. Besides five originals by the leader, including the James Brown-inspired title track, the set is made up of Mintzer's vibrant arrangements of the Wayne Shorter-penned Weather Report classic "Elegant People" and three of his favorite R&B tunes from the late 1960s: the Isley Brothers' "It's Your Thing," Sam & Dave's "I Thank You" (written by David Porter and Isaac Hayes), and Sly & the Family Stone's "Sing a Simple Song."

"I grew up listening to this music," says Mintzer, whose radio dial was tuned to WNEW-FM when he was growing up in New Rochelle, New York. "There was less concern with classification and categorization back then. There was a kind of connection between what people like John Coltrane and Charles Lloyd were doing and what some of the rock guys were doing in terms of Indian and Eastern influences and stretching out on long vamps. For people like myself who like all different kinds of music, this was a great time for music and art."

Ashby, who has worked with Mintzer on all five of his big band dates for MCG Jazz, sees Mintzer as having "created such an important body of work for large ensemble that it just cannot be overlooked. Few bands write mostly original music for large ensemble, and hardly any then have much of the music available in a published format for other bands and students to study and play. Because his range of writing for the band extends from Brazilian to funk to R&B to straight-ahead to fusion and everything in between, I think Bob stands alone as the preeminent composer/arranger for big band at this time. His passion for the idiom puts him at the top of the pyramid."

Mintzer connected with Manchester Craftsmen's Guild in 2004. The Big Band debuted with Live at MCG and followed up with Old School, New Lessons (2006), both of which featured Kurt Elling, and Swing Out (2008). On the Grammy-nominated For the Moment (2012), the spotlight was on Brazilian music, with guitarist/composer Chico Pinheiro as special guest.

The lifelong New Yorker, who's considered one of the tenor saxophonists to come out of the school of New York players in the 1970s (also including Michael Brecker, Bob Berg, Dave Liebman, and Steve Grossman), and whose big band dates to 1983, when the Brecker brothers asked him to put together an ensemble for their club Seventh Avenue South, has been based in Los Angeles since 2008. He lives in the former house of composer Arnold Schoenberg (his first L.A. residence, 1934-1936), and is the recipient of the Buzz McCoy-endowed chair of jazz studies at the University of Southern California.

Mintzer continues to tour with the Yellowjackets (which he joined in 1990), does workshops all over the world, and serves as a guest conductor/soloist with college and pro bands. His upcoming dates with the Yellowjackets include: 5/27 Howard Theatre, Washington, DC; 5/28-29 Blue Note, NYC; 6/26 Rochester (NY) Jazz Festival; and a European tour 7/1-15. Mintzer will be appearing at the Hong Kong Jazz Festival 6/3-9 with big band and orchestra; touring Europe 6/15-20 with the Hammond Eggs trio; and serving on faculty at the Centrum Jazz Camp in Port Townsend, WA 7/20-25. Finally, Mintzer will be part of a Jaco Pastorius tribute, with Vince Mendoza, at the Hollywood Bowl 8/13 (also with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra) and the Monterey Jazz Festival 9/18.

JESSY J To Release 5th Studio Album On May 26 Via Shanachie Entertainment

‘My One And Only One’ Is Cross-Cultural Journey of Melody and Emotion

Lead Single “The Tango Boy” Features Special Guests Paul Brown and Gregg Karukas

Album Includes Covers of Toni Braxton, Shuggie Otis and “Lovesong” by The Cure

Record Release Tour In June & July With Fall Festival Dates To Follow

Los Angeles, CA: On May 26, Shanachie Entertainment will release the highly-anticipated new album from Internationally renowned saxophonist Jessy J. Dubbed “Sexy…Soulful…Irresistible…Incredible” by Smooth Jazz MonthlyMy One And Only One seamlessly melds Latin Jazz, Soul, Smooth Grooves and Funk with alluring melodies, both musically and vocally.

Written, arranged and produced by Jessy J, My One And Only One is her fifth studio album (and second for Shanachie, who also released 2013’s Second Chances). With 10 songs that ebb and flow between the heat of the midday sun and the resplendent glow of a starry-filled night, Only One has the feel of an instant classic, for life’s journeys, both in the physical and spiritual worlds.

Dedicated to all of her teachers, past and present, Jessy showcases her inimitable musical ability to set the mood for any occasion, none more so than on the album’s rousing lead single “The Tango Boy”. From there, she keeps the festive vibes in overdrive with “Paraíso Mágico,” a Latin-flavored jam, in which she sings in Spanish and showcases her agility as a gregarious flautist. Paraíso echoes vintage Santana, with its evocative shuffle, and Jethro Tull, with its resolute flute. Elsewhere, she unfurls a sultry daydream on “Una Mas,” busts out the funk on “Back To The Basics” and adds mellifluous bi-lingual vocals to “Siempre”.

Among the stand-outs on the album are gorgeous arrangements of time-tested classics, “You’re Makin’ Me High” (written by Toni Braxton & Kenneth “Babyface” Edmunds), “Strawberry Letter 23” (written by Shuggie Otis and made famous by The Brothers Johnson) and the eternally beautiful ”Lovesong,” originally made famous by dour English rockers The Cure and most recently by British singer Adele.

Special guests on Only One include Gregg Karukas who adds his deft mastery of keys/strings and Paul Brown, who plays guitar on five of the songs, while co-writing the title track, “Una Mas” and “The Tango Boy”.

Renowned for guest appearances on American Idol and The Voice, and her work with Michael Bublé, Aerosmith, Jessica Simpson and Michael Bolton, Jessy will tour throughout 2015, starting with record release shows at Spaghettinis in Orange County and Beverly Hills. From there, she’ll embark on a cross country summer tour dotted by festival appearances in Detroit (Dearborn Jazz on the Avenue), Palm Springs (Women’s Jazz Fest), and Mission Viejo (JazzFest). Report: New Unreleased Sun Ra Material Coming in Fall

Music will span 1962-1991

By JazzTimes

A new series of remastered, reissued and unreleased recordings by Sun Ra will be released this fall, Billboard reports. The article stated that the Manimal Group will press and distribute the new CD and vinyl. The project, said the article, “is being overseen by Irwin Chusid, the administrator for Sun Ra LLC as well as an outsider music expert, author and WFMU DJ, who will issue the music through the LLC's as-yet-named label.”

“The new releases will be broken down into three categories: a set of recordings from the basement of the Choreographers Workshop, the New York City locale where Sun Ra's band practiced and recorded between 1962-1965; an exotica collection containing music spanning his recording career from 1956 through 1991; and a set of singles compiled by Anderson,” said the piece.

LIZZ WRIGHT MAKES HER CONCORD RECORDS DEBUT WITH THE POWERFUL FREEDOM & SURRENDER

Five years after the release of her critically acclaimed, gospel-laden disc, Fellowship (Verve), Lizz Wright makes her Concord Records debut with the powerful Freedom & Surrender, set for release on September 4, 2015. The 35-year-old singer-songwriter - renowned for her earthy alto voice and emotive yet straight-forward vocal serenading - teams with four-time GRAMMY-winning bassist and producer Larry Klein, who's best known for his work with such leading lights as Joni Mitchell, Madeleine Peyroux and Tracy Chapman.

Wright enlisted Klein based upon the recommendation of trusted colleagues. Already a fan, she was well aware of his production brilliance, particularly through his work with strong-minded women artists. "We talked over the phone; then we met and did as much talking as we did laughing," she recalls. "I don't laugh to just mess around and make people feel good; I laugh because I actually get you. Just the fact that I felt that way with him - I just said, ‘OK, we're cool.'"

For the sessions, Klein and Wright gather a cadre of great musicians that includes drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, bassist Dan Lutz, percussionist Pete Korpela, guitarist Dean Parks and Jesse Harris; and keyboardists Kenny Banks, Pete Kuzma, and Billy Childs. In addition, Klein also recruited his longtime songwriting partner David Batteau to collaborate with Wright in the songwriting process. "I loved writing with them," Wright enthuses.

Freedom & Surrender was initially supposed to be a disc of mostly cover-songs, centered on themes of "the circuitous dance of love." Instead, it became the very opposite - an album of mostly originals - while keeping the initial theme intact. Wright explains, "There's a time for everything. There's a time to do cover-song records, which can be like sharing good homework after doing really beautiful research. It can be amazing and very creative in that way. But I just knew it wasn't time for me to be doing that. I had to prove it and buckle down and make it happen."

Without a doubt, Wright certainly made it happen with Freedom & Surrender, her sexiest, most sensual album yet. She wrote ten of the disc's 15 songs, six with Klein and Batteau. The three penned "The New Game" - the disc's original working title - a rollicking, country-blues ditty with poetic lyrics and verses. The album as a whole touches upon fresher emotional terrain, especially the ethereal, acoustic guitar and Hammond organ-powered "Somewhere Down the Mystic," the beautiful lament "Here and Now," (which was inspired in part by the passing of Maya Angelou), the salty and spiteful "You," the tender R&B ballad "Blessed the Brave," and the erotic blues drag "If You Lead Me."

Freedom & Surrender also finds Wright joining forces with celebrated songwriters J.D. Souther and Maia Sharp on "Right Where You Are" and "Real Life Painting," respectively. The former is a mesmerizing love slow jam, featuring Wright in an amorous duet with Gregory Porter, while the latter is a bucolic evocation about dwelling in the momentary carnal bliss of a love affair.

Souther invited Wright to his small farm in Nashville for a writing session where she recalls playing a lot of piano in his barn. "I gave him a few chords and turned them around into something that we liked. I didn't think he was going to do anything with them but then he sent me part of the song all the way through to the B section," Wright recalls. "I respect his clarity and speed."

Wright was also delighted to have the song feature Porter, whom she toured with in 2013. "The song is very tender and slow. To trust him with that was easy; to hear him move through a suspended, vulnerable space, you can get into the machinery of his voice," she offers.

Wright is equally enthusiastic about her writing sessions with Sharp, which yielded "Real Life Painting," containing reflections with cinematic-like qualities. "She is a real fast writer and a wonderful guitarist," Wright notes.

On "Freedom" and "Surrender" - two songs which bookend the disc - Wright reconnected with Toshi Reagon, who played tremendous roles on her three previous discs - Dreaming Wide Awake (2005), The Orchard (2008) and Fellowship (2010). The gentle yet lusty waltz "Surrender" showcases Wright in a seductive splendor, while the declarative, funk-driven "Freedom" displays Wright in a feisty independent mode. ‘Freedom' is so unapologetic; it has weight to it that differs from the other songs," Wright explains. "Larry totally got it; he thought the song was just killing. There's something about Toshi in which she always calls my spirit to be true in whatever I do."

Jesse Harris, another longtime collaborator of Wright, co-wrote the lulling, erotically charged ballad "The Game" and the slinky "Lean In," which moves to a midnight groove that Marvin Gaye might have concocted with Leon Ware.

When it came to covers, Wright chose wisely. She slows the Bee Gees' 1967 ballad "To Love Somebody," to a smoldering crawl that maximizes both her gorgeous voice and the song's pleading lyrics. On bonus track Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger's classic "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" - a song made famous in 1972 by Roberta Flack - Wright delivers a haunting, almost noir-ish interpretation. And on Nick Drake's immortal folk classic, "River Man," Wright uncoils newfound emotional clarity through her mesmerizing delivery and the spectral arrangement, which also features noted German trumpeter Till Brönner blowing a blustery solo.

Wright has reached new heights in terms of singing and songwriting, and has delivered an album destined to become a classic.

"Jeff Denson Trio + Lee Konitz" to Be Released July 7 by Denson's Ridgeway Records
(Published: June 08, 2015)

Bassist/composer Jeff Denson has enjoyed a richly rewarding musical and personal relationship with alto saxophone legend Lee Konitz since 2007, when Denson joined Konitz's well-traveled New Quartet. The latest chapter in their association involves the recording, at Berkeley's Fantasy Studios in February of this year, of Jeff Denson Trio + Lee Konitz, with pianist Dan Zemelman and drummer Jon Arkin. Scheduled for release by Denson's Ridgeway Records on July 7, the CD explores new music, offers fresh takes on seldom-played compositions of the Lennie Tristano School, and features scat singing by Konitz and Denson.

Jeff Denson Trio + Lee Konitz is the first in a planned series of Ridgeway recordings to team Denson's trio plus a notable guest artist. Marking nearly the 60th anniversary of Konitz's first appearance on record with his mentor, Lennie Tristano, the album goes places where no other Tristano (or Konitz) tribute has ever gone via some rarely recorded songs, including Warne Marsh's "Background Music" and Tristano's "Baby" and "East Thirty-Second." It also reveals Konitz's delightful scat singing, something that has never been documented on record to this extent.

Jeff first met Lee in 2003, but they didn't team up musically until a few years later, in Germany, when the saxophonist invited Denson's trio Minsarah (with Florian Weber and Ziv Ravitz) to his apartment in Cologne to rehearse. To their surprise, he did not ask them to play their instruments.

"Instead he said, let's sing, let's improvise some stuff," Denson recalls. "I guess he had heard us play enough. That was the start of a great adventure. The stuff we do is very different than any music in his canon. Lee is a true improviser. He doesn't play licks. He really responds."

The Lee Konitz New Quartet with Denson, Weber, and Ravitz went on to tour internationally and produce three albums: Deep Lee (2008), Live at the Village Vanguard (2009), and Standards Live at the Village Vanguard (2014). Of the 87-year-old Konitz, Denson remarks that "he's old enough to be my grandfather, but he is still improvising on a master level. He's not stuck in any way musically."

Jeff Denson, 38, was born and raised in the Washington, DC area. He attended Berklee (where Minsarah was formed), earned his Master's in jazz studies at Florida State University, and relocated to Southern California to pursue his doctorate (at UC San Diego) in contemporary music performance with an emphasis in composition. Based since 2011 in the East Bay, he is a full professor at the California Jazz Conservatory (formerly the Jazzschool Institute) and has forged ties with some of the Bay Area's top players, including bassoonist Paul Hanson, guitarist Mimi Fox, and drummer Alan Hall.

A prolific composer and arranger, Denson has written music for an array of jazz settings, from big band to trio, as well as for string ensembles, solo bass, and a chamber opera. He's begun work on a chamber opera, plans to try his hand at film scoring, and is preparing a series of educational books for his Ridgeway Publishing imprint (part of his recently established nonprofit, Ridgeway Arts).

In addition to Denson's ongoing Trio +1 projects, the bassist is in the midst of organizing several other recordings. One will feature his Secret World group, which he's expanding to a quintet with Paul Hanson. He's in the process of completing an album with Electreo, with Hanson, drummer Alan Hall, and Denson on electric bass. And he's collaborating with Mimi Fox and violinist Mads Tolling in a trio whose arrangements of the music from Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band will be released in time for that seminal album's 50th anniversary in 2017.

To say that Jeff Denson is currently in a spectacularly expansive period is an understatement; he is positively thriving on all possible fronts. "I'm in an extremely stimulating and productive time right now and I'm working as hard as I can to express all of my ideas," he says. "I find that with my teaching and all of the various projects I have, I'm able to get a complete picture of what I'm doing -- each one inspires the other."

The Jeff Denson Trio + Lee Konitz will be performing extensively in Europe this summer and fall. Next month they appear 7/4 at Comblain La Tour Jazz Festival, Hamoir, Belgium; and 7/17 UniversaiJazz, Valladolid, Spain (Trio with Kari Ikonen, p; Ronen Itzik, d).

Fall dates include 10/2 Angra Jazz Festival, Azores, Portugal; 10/23 Domicil, Dortmund; 10/24 Lantaren Venster, Rotterdam; 10/26 Porgy & Bess, Vienna; 10/27 Unterfahrt, Munich; 10/29 Workshop, Helsinki; 10/30 Jazz & The City Festival, Bremen (Trio with Dan Zemelman, p; Alan Hall, d). Additional dates are in the works.

Closer to home, Denson will appear with Zemelman and Hall at the Sound Room in Oakland 8/14.

Glasper's 2009 album Double Booked, which featured both his Trio and Experiment band and earned Glasper his first GRAMMY nomination, has also been reissued on vinyl for the first time as one of the 100 essential Blue Note titles in the label's on-going 75th Anniversary Vinyl Reissue Series. Glasper has also received wide recognition for his prominent role on rapper Kendrick Lamar's acclaimed new album To Pimp A Butterfly.

Ten years after making his Blue Note debut-and following two GRAMMY-winning volumes of his critically and commercially successful R&B-oriented Black Radio albums-Robert Glasper has returned to his acclaimed acoustic jazz trio on Covered. Glasper, bassist Vicente Archer and drummer Damion Reid-who form the original trio featured on Glasper's first two Blue Note albums: Canvas (2005) and In My Element (2007)-reconvened at the legendary Capitol Studios in Hollywood, California in December to record the album in front of an intimate live audience. The set list features songs by hip-hop and R&B stars like Kendrick Lamar, Jhené Aiko, John Legend, Musiq Soulchild, and Bilal alongside the jazz standard "Stella By Starlight." Displaying his trademark eclecticism, Glasper also includes tunes by Radiohead and Joni Mitchell, along with a stirring collaboration with legendary singer/activist Harry Belafonte. The Glasper originals on the album include a re-working of "I Don't Even Care," a bonus track from Black Radio 2 that featured Macy Gray and Jean Grae.

The set features Joe Lovano (tenor saxophone), Larry Grenadier (double bass) and Bill Stewart (drums) in addition to Scofield, and was recorded on March 16 and 17 at the Carriage House Studios, Stamford, Conn. Masterfully "Cool": An album unlike any other by Bob James and Nathan East

(Published: July 08, 2015)

"The New Cool," an expansive acoustic offering centered on scholarly jazz piano and bass duets, will be released September 18, a first from the GRAMMY®-honored artists and long-time collaborators.

Nashville, Tennessee (7 July 2015): Albums just aren't made like the way "The New Cool" was made. Yamaha Entertainment Group label president Chris Gero put legendary keyboardist Bob James and master bassist Nathan East in the recording studio, equipped them with state-of-the-art Yamaha gear and gave them free reign to create. Recorded entirely in Nashville, the long-time collaborators emerged with an unexpected and audacious collection of original compositions plus a few handpicked classics, an acoustic jazz outing that will make you forget everything you thought you knew about these GRAMMY®-recognized artists best known as contemporary jazz luminaries. The disc produced by Gero, James and East will be released September 18.

"The New Cool" unfolds much in the way the meticulously-crafted project was conceived. The germ begins organically with a couple of intimate James and East duets. Pastoral piano wanderings explore the outer perimeter of straight-ahead jazz where they peruse, mirror and engage with meandering bass lines. In fact, more than half of the record's compositions written by James and/or East are sparsely-produced, probing piano and bass sojourns. As the seed sprouts, dramatic orchestral accoutrements added by the Nashville Recording Orchestra illuminate the piano, keyboard and bass explorations, contributing hues that are warmly rustic and autumnal or whimsically vibrant. James challenges with deftly inventive arrangements on complex pieces like "All Will Be Revealed" while East counts off supple rhythms that are astutely measured and metered. Fluid melodies and harmonies ranging from subtle, serene and meditative to lush, exquisite and cascading blossom throughout, whether emoted by a dexterous piano, keyboard or bass or East's celestial vocalese. An imaginatively-arranged version of Willie Nelson's "Crazy" bops and swings in sublimely surprising style before the ultimate surprise is revealed: a serendipitous vocal from Vince Gill. The proceedings flourish in a gust of breezy Brazilian jazz when percussionist Rafael Padilla and drummer Scott Williamson appear on "Canto Y La Danza" and climax in a crashing crescendo on the explosive and intricately orchestrated "Turbulence."

"‘The New Cool' project carries with it a special level of excitement for me as Bob and I have been courting the idea of this duo adventure for many years," said East, who released his self-titled, GRAMMY® nominated solo debut album last year via Yamaha Entertainment Group on the heels of playing on Daft Punk's 2014 GRAMMY®-winning Record of the Year "Get Lucky." "I've always loved the sound of the piano and bass together, and have enjoyed duo recordings by the greats: Bill Evans & Eddie Gomez and Keith Jarrett & Charlie Haden. ‘The New Cool' is our celebration of more than 25 years of friendship and musical camaraderie. This collaboration was embraced by Yamaha Entertainment Group and producer Chris Gero, who took it yet to another level."

"The more I played with Nathan over the course of many live performances and spanning more than 25 years, the more in sync we were whether or not we had the anchor of the drums," said James, a two-time GRAMMY® winner considered one of the founding fathers of smooth/contemporary jazz and whose extensive catalogue is frequently sampled on hip hop tracks. "Something special happens when we only have each other's notes to play off of, when the music is totally exposed."

Although busy with touring and recording individually as well as together, including as half of the contemporary jazz supergroup Fourplay, James and East are committed and energized by "The New Cool," which will be supported comprehensively in traditional and non-traditional ways harnessing the full power of Yamaha Entertainment Group. Nearly a dozen video vignettes that take viewers into the recording studio during the making of the album will soon begin to trickle out through the official website (www.TheNewCoolAlbum.com) as well as on the artists' social media platforms and a full-scale documentary film will unspool in the fall shortly after the album's street date. A grand-scale concert date is in the initial planning stages, which is expected to be streamed live and captured for television broadcast.

The songs that make-up "The New Cool" album are:

"The New Cool"
"Oliver's Bag"
"All Will Be Revealed"
"Midnight Magic/Love Me As Though There Were No Tomorrow"
"Crazy" (featuring Vince Gill)
"How Deep Is The Ocean"
"Canto Y La Danza"
"Waltz For Judy"
"Seattle Sunrise"
"Ghost Of A Chance"
"Turbulence"
"House Of Blue" (U.S. bonus track)
