Noa Levy and Shimpei Ogawa, “I Get a Kick Out of You”

Fellow San Francisco expats – vocalist Noa Levy and bassist Shimpei Ogawa – collaborated on a duo album celebrating the songwriting legacy of Cole Porter. You, Me & Cole is set for release on July 10 via Belle and includes a sprightly reimagining of the classic “I Get a Kick Out of You.” “The song’s fantastic, humorous lyrics offered us a broad canvas to create a new arrangement and conversation between our two instruments – with 2020 ears and sensibilities,” explains Levy via a statement.

Vincent Peirani & Emile Parisien “Nouchka”: Just in time for Bastille  Day — which, if you remember from your European History class, commemorates the storming of the Bastille prison in 1789, a turning point in the French Revolution — accordionist Vincent Peirani and saxophonist Emile Parisien have released “Nouchka,” a single from their new duo album Abrazo. The album, due out August 28 on ACT Records, reimagines the music of South American masters Astor Piazzolla, Tomás Gubitsch and Xavier Cugat. Also featured on the disc are interpretations of works by Kate Bush and Jelly Roll Morton.  For “Nouchka,” however, the French-born Peirani took a decidedly more personal approach: “Nouchka was the nickname of my wife when she was a little girl,” said Peirani. “I decided to compose a song thinking about her as a child, and also about who she is now.
When she listened to it for the first time, she was not aware about my ‘inspiration.’ I asked her how she felt about the song, and she told me that it could have been composed for the daughter we could have. (We have two boys). So, for me, it was a kind of perfect match. I hope you will enjoy it!” JAZZIZ is proud to premiere the track via the player below.

Nubya Garcia goes back to the Source for debut solo album and releases epic title track as first single

The acclaimed tenorist releases her powerful debut album on renowned US jazz label

Source is tenor saxophonist Nubya Garcia’s eagerly anticipated debut solo album and is released on 21 August on Concord Jazz. Jointly produced by Garcia and renowned producer Kwes (Nérija, Bobby Womack, Solange), the forthright, groove-driven and soulful long-player features Garcia’s hard-touring band of keyboardist Joe Armon-Jones, bassist Daniel Casimir and drummer Sam Jones, alongside guest appearances by fellow Nérija bandmate Cassie Kinoshi on alto sax; KOKOROKO horn players Richie Seivwright (trombone) and Sheila Maurice-Grey (trumpet) and vocals from Akenya on closing track ‘Boundless Beings’. The first single is the title track, an epic 12-minute journey with guest appearances by Ms Maurice, Kinoshi and Seivwright, which can be heard below.

The album is Garcia’s first extended solo outing, following her two EPs, 2017’s Nubya’s 5ive and 2018’s When We Are, and her acclaimed band projects with Nérija and Maisha, plus frequent touring with Armon-Jones. As a key figure of the ‘new jazz’ resurgence of 2018, Garcia has forged a formidable rep as a hugely charismatic performer with a powerful sound, which has seen her win armfuls of awards including Jazz FM ‘Breakthrough Act of the Year Award’ (2018) and Jazz FM ‘UK Jazz Act of the Year Award’ (2019), as well as breaking through in the US. See the September issue of Jazzwise for an exclusive interview with Nubya about her album.

Takuya Kuroda, “Change” feat. Corey King

Trumpeter Takuya Kuroda released “Change,” a new single from his forthcoming album, Fly Moon Die Soon, due out September 18. The track features Corey King on vocals. It also showcases Kuroda’s love of such genres as post-bop and soul-jazz, and much like the rest of the album, was built on beats created by him and later finished in-studio with engineer Todd Carter. In Kuroda’s words, “this album is about the irony between the greatness of nature and the beautiful [obscenity] of humanity. Melodies and grooves fly back and forth from being spiritual to being vulgar.”

Norman Brown, “Heading Wes”

vinyl-record-mockup-scene%402x.jpg

Guitarist/composer Norman Brown has a new album due out August 7 via Shanachie. Heart to Heart features several notable guests, as well as this track, “Heading Wes,” which is a tribute to Brown’s father and the iconic Wes Montgomery. “My dad loved Wes and inspired me to learn that style by allowing me to have the car on Saturday night if I learned his favorite Wes tunes, like ‘Bumping On Sunset’ and ‘Down Here on the Ground,'” says Brown. “Frankly I would have learned them based on my own love of his playing.  His technique, beautiful chord soloing in addition to his single one-note expression was wonderfully original and innovative.”

Two Unheard Azymuth Demos Have Resurfaced: Two home-recorded demo tracks by Brazilian psychedelic jazz-funk band Azymuth have surfaced. The first is an instrumental take on Roberto and Erasmo Carlos’ 1969 Jovem Guarda hit “As Curvas da Estrada de Santos.” The second is a spacey psych-folk oddity titled “Zé e Paraná.” Both will be released on 7″ vinyl via Far Out on September 18. Their release follows last year’s Demos (1973-75). The tracks were recorded in Jose Roberto Bertrami’s house in Rio de Janiero at some point between 1973 and 1975.
