NEA Jazz Master Randy Weston to Release New 2-CD Set, "The African Nubian Suite," Jan. 20

NEA Jazz Master, iconic pianist/composer, and still-vital jazz elder Randy Weston, at 90, remains a powerful force in jazz. Currently serving as artist-in-residence at Medgar Evers College at the City University of New York; celebrated earlier this month at Harvard University, which has acquired his archive; and named a United States Artists (USA) Fellow last week, Weston is now preparing to release a new recording on his African Rhythms label. The 2-CD set, The African Nubian Suite, captures a concert presented at New York University's Skirball Center for the Performing Arts by the Institute of African American Affairs on Easter Sunday 2012 and will be released by African Rhythms on January 20, 2017.

The African Nubian Suite lays out the history of the human race in music and words. Weston and narrator Wayne Chandler trace it back to Ardi, a woman who walked upright 4.4 million years ago in Nubia, a region along the Nile River that straddles parts of what are today Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia.

"In one single work," Robin D.G. Kelley writes in the booklet notes, "Weston manages to pay tribute to the ancient tombs of Sidi Bilal in Aswan, the sufi tradition, the holy city of Touba in Senegal, China's great Shang Dynasty, African folk music, the timeless history of the blues, and the unity of humankind."

Weston was joined in a circle at the sold-out concert by a remarkably diverse, truly international cast of performers. A few played without accompaniment, others as duos, trios, and larger ensembles. They include trumpeter Cecil Bridgewater, trombonist Robert Trowers, tuba player Howard Johnson, saxophonist-flutist T.K. Blue, tenor saxophonist Billy Harper, bassist Alex Blake, drummer Lewis Nash, conguero Candido (who, at 94, is four years older than Weston), nefer player Ayodele Maakheru, guimbry player Lhoussine Bouhamidy from Morocco, kora player and vocalist Saliou Souso from Gambia, balafon player Martin Kwaku Obeng from Ghana, pipa player and vocalist Min Xiao-Fen from China, singer Tanpani Demda Cissoko from Mali, African-American percussionists Neil Clarke and Ayanda Clarke, and the late poet Jayne Cortez.

"The suite is saying, ‘Let's start with our first mama,'" Weston explains. "The whole idea is that we're all so different on this planet, but in reality, we all look alike. If you look at the flowers and look at the insects, Mother Nature paints all the colors of her subjects. One is brown. This one is black. Whatever. We've got one nose, one mouth. The whole idea is we all come from the same place. We all come from Africa. It's scientifically true, culturally true."

Weston adds: "I feel that this is the kind of work that should be in the schools, in the churches, in the cultural centers, the kind of work for all people to listen to and read about, because it will give us a better understanding of Mother Africa."

Today, the Brooklyn resident continues to tour throughout the United States and overseas. He holds honorary Doctor of Music degrees from Colby College, Brooklyn College, and the New England Conservatory of Music; was artist-in-residence at NYU, the New School earlier this year, and currently at Medgar Evers College at the City University of New York. In 2010 Duke University Press published African Rhythms: The Autobiography of Randy Weston, composed by Randy Weston and arranged by Willard Jenkins. Weston is a Fellow of the Guggenheim Foundation and a Grant recipient of the Doris Duke Foundation; he was honored by King Mohammed VI of Morocco, and his decades of work -- including scores, correspondence, photographs, and recordings -- are now archived at Harvard University as the Randy Weston Collection. In 2016 Weston was voted into the Down Beat Hall of Fame.

Weston's African Rhythms Trio will perform at Aimé Césaire Performance Hall in Martinique on Friday 11/25. Weston conducts an African Rhythms Masterclass ("A Spiritual Awakening"), featuring Eddie Palmieri, at Medgar Evers College, Brooklyn, NY, 11/29. The Randy Weston African Rhythms Quintet appears at Dizzy's, NYC, Friday through Sunday 12/2-4. A CD release show for The African Nubian Suite in New York City is in the works.

Four years after her latest album success album “Lento”, Youn Sun Nah is back with “She Moves On”, her new album to be released on May 19th, 2017.

Outstanding improviser with a fabulous vocal technique, Korean singer is now among the leading figures of the contemporary vocal jazz scene. Youn Sun Nah’s universe is based on a minimalist aesthetic, a search of pureness and intimacy from where the fire of her powerful and full-bodied voice can spring out at any time.

With She Moves On, Youn Sun Nah once again delivers a colourist work, filled with charm and poetry. This time the choice repertoire is inspired by American Folk, Jazz and Singer/Songwrites – featuring a wide range of emotions, both for her own compositions and for an iconoclastic exploration of the repertoires of Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell or Paul Simon.

The album has been recorded in New York, in close collaboration with producer and avant-garde pianist Jamie Saft, featuring Marc Ribot on guitar (Tom Waits, Elvis Costello) and Brad Jones (double bass) & Dan Rieser (drums).

Pianist Mike Longo's Consolidated Artists Productions to Release His New Trio CD, "Only Time Will Tell, March 31

(Published: March 05, 2017)

Connoisseurs of jazz piano trios will welcome the release, on March 31, of Only Time Will Tell, the new trio recording by piano master Mike Longo with Paul West on bass and Lewis Nash on drums. The disc is Longo's 20th for the CAP (Consolidated Artists Productions) label, and his 26th since debuting as a leader in 1962.

Included on the CD are two compositions by Dizzy Gillespie, with whom Longo worked as pianist and musical director for 26 years, until Gillespie's death in 1993. The up-tempo "Wheatleigh Hall" was first recorded by the trumpeter in 1957 on an album with Sonny Rollins and Sonny Stitt. The gently swinging "Just a Thought," written by Gillespie in the '60s as a piano feature, had never been previously recorded.

Longo's trio-mates had their own associations with Gillespie. West had done two stints with the trumpeter -- in the '50s with Dizzy's big band and again in the '60s with the quintet that included Longo. Nash had worked with Gillespie on several occasions in subsequent years.

Longo, West, and Nash play two Thelonious Monk tunes -- "Nutty" and "Brilliant Corners" -- on Only Time Will Tell and also offer their takes on Oscar Pettiford's "Bohemia After Dark"; "Exactly Like You," delivered at an ultra-slow tempo; and Eubie Blake's "Memories of You," which closes the album. Among the Longo originals are the bossa nova-propelled "Stepping Up"; "Conflict of Interest," first recorded for a 1994 quintet album dedicated to Gillespie; and the gently waltzing title track, inspired by a documentary about Lyndon Johnson. "I started feeling sorry for him and went to the piano and wrote it," says Longo. "The point of the title is that after the passage of time, things may appear different than when you originally perceived them."

The son of a band-leading bassist father and a church organist mother, Michael Longo Jr. was inspired as a child by boogie-woogie pianists Sugar Chile Robinson in his native Cincinnati, and Jack Fina later in Fort Lauderdale, where the Longos had moved when he was in the third grade. While in Florida, Longo was later inspired by jazz piano master Oscar Peterson, with whom he would eventually spend six months studying privately.

After earning a bachelor's degree in classical piano at Western Kentucky University, in 1959, Longo spent two years touring with the Salt City Six, the Dixieland group, and was hired at the Metropole Café in New York as one of the club's house pianists. In his two shifts a day, he backed Coleman Hawkins, Gene Krupa, and Henry "Red" Allen, among many others.

Gillespie, who first heard the young pianist at the Metropole, hired him in 1966. Longo went on to make nine albums with the trumpet legend, beginning with Swing Low, Sweet Cadillac in 1967, and has also recorded with Astrud Gilberto, Lee Konitz, Buddy Rich, and Moody, to name just a few. He cut the first album under his own name, A Jazz Portrait of Funny Girl, in 1962; his last 20 have appeared on Consolidated Artists Productions (CAP), a musicians' cooperative label managed by Longo and his wife. He also has enjoyed a successful second career as an educator and creator of instructional books and videos.

Since January 6, 2004, the anniversary of his friend Dizzy Gillespie's death, Longo has presented concerts every Tuesday evening in the Gillespie Auditorium of the New York City Baha'i Center. Longo will appear there 4/25 with his 17-piece New York State of the Art Jazz Ensemble featuring Ira Hawkins. He'll be performing at Mezzrow 5/25 with Paul West.

New Charlie Watts Big Band Album Out April 21

Impulse!/Verve release of 2010 concert with the Danish Radio Big Band

On April 21, Impulse!/Verve will release Charlie Watts Meets the Danish Radio Big Band, an album of a 2010 Danish National Radio broadcast performance at the Concert Hall of Denmark in Copenhagen. Featuring a mix of big-band charts, original compositions and Rolling Stones covers, the concert reunited Watts with childhood friend and special-guest bassist Dave Green, and hearkened back to Watts’ early ’60s work as a freelance jazz drummer in Denmark—before the Rolling Stones became a household name.

The seven tracks on the album include the Charlie Watts and Jim Keltner-penned “Elvin Suite” parts one and two; three Stones’ covers: “Faction” (a bossa nova reworking of “Satisfaction”), “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” and “Paint It Black”; and big-band classics “I Should Care” and “Molassas.”

To preorder the album, visit http://smarturl.it/WattsMeetsDRBB_iTu (iTunes) or http://smarturl.it/WattsMeetsDRBB_Amz (Amazon).

Drummer Ulysses Owens Jr. To Release Upcoming Album "Falling Forward"

(Published: July 12, 2017)

Drummer Ulysses Owens, Jr. is releasing his latest album entitled Falling Forward (Spice of Life Records) on August 4, 2017. The album marks his fourth project as a leader and features vibraphonist Joel Rossand bassist Reuben Rogers, with special guests, vocalist Vuyo Sotasheand pianist Stephen Feifke.

Widely regarded as one of the top jazz drummers of his generation, Ulysses Owens, Jr. (Joey Alexander, Kurt Elling, Wynton Marsalis, Christian McBride, Gregory Porter) continues to broaden his portfolio of work, further establishing him as a noted bandleader, gifted composer, and arranger. The concept for his latest release stemmed from his desire to assemble a smaller group of musicians from whom he draws inspiration. That, in turn, led Owens to tap noted vibraphonist Joel Ross and in-demand bassist Reuben Rogers to join him to form the trio called THREE. He states, "I hadn't recorded a solo album in a few years, and really desired to record a smaller group of players that inspired me. Within the trio context is musically and sonically where I feel very comfortable, but also where I feel like I can push and go in any direction with the right guys around me. Joel Ross is such a young talent and ball of fire musically, and Reuben Rogers is an anchor and has been a musical partner of mine for the last few years. I knew that with both of them, anything would be possible for me in this new phase of my career."

The band's first album, Falling Forward, showcases a varied repertoire ranging from classic standards to upbeat, funk-driven numbers, to more dulcet, emotive pieces. Of his musical selections, Owens states, "I wanted to create a list of songs that would be accessible to the new jazz listener, but at the same time, could be appreciated by a true jazz fan. I also wish to bring more of this great music to a broader audience and hope people develop an affinity for the genre through this album. My only agenda is to make great music." Owens feels that 'Falling Forward' aptly describes his current place in life and adds, "I am at peace even in the midst of taking risks and finding balance in enjoying personal trials, because growth is born out of lack of comfort and challenging the weakest place within."

Falling Forward was produced by Keith Witty with executive producer Tomoki Sassa, and was recorded in February 2017 at Big Orange Sheep Studios in Brooklyn, NY. The album will be available for sale on August 4, 2017 via leading digital music providers; it was released in Japan on May 24, 2017, and has already received rave reviews from Jazz Japan magazine and other top Japanese publications.

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 23, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Jazz fusion composer and drummer Bob Holz will begin recording with bassist Stanley Clarke in September for his next album due out Spring of 2018. "This collaboration with the jazz star and Return to Forever bassist/composer, Stanley Clarke will involve the recording of new compositions I wrote that will take from my roots in jazz, classical, blues and rock music," says Holz. Joining Holz and Clarke will be former Mahavishnu Orchestra bassist Ralphe Armstrong who currently plays in Holz's touring band, Bob Holz and A Vision Forward featuring Chet Catallo and Ralphe Armstrong. "My compositions have plenty of room for interplay between electric bass and acoustic bass," adds Holz. Bob Holz is presently managed by Roy Holland Productions and is signed to MVD Entertainment Group. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWDKDTfM59Q

"I'm really honored to record with Stanley Clarke as his music has been a strong influence on me," added Holz. Clarke has written the music for over 70 major motion pictures in addition to his successful solo career and long tenure as a member of Return To Forever with Chick Corea, Al Di Meola and Lenny White.

The recording will take place in Los Angeles with famed sound engineer, Dennis Moody recording, mixing and mastering the performances. "Dennis mixed my last album and really knows how to create a world class record," continued Holz. Moody also helped out with mixing Holz's band live last May at Catalina Bar and Grill Jazz Club in Hollywood, CaliforniaStanley Clarke also attended that concert which led to the upcoming recording session for Holz's next album. Additionally, Executive Producer Rob Stathis will once again contribute his production skills to the making of the record. Rob Stathis has been involved with producing Holz's past collaborations with guitarist/composer the late Larry Coryell. "The loss of Larry Coryell last February was really rough. Bob and I want to continue in the tradition which Larry excelled in," says Stathis.

Since the February 2017 release of Holz's second album, Visions and Friends, Holz's touring band, Bob Holz and A Vision Forward featuring Chet Catallo and Ralphe Armstrong has played numerous live concerts from New York to California. The band features guitar guru Chet Catallo (Spyro GyraChet Catallo and the Cats) and bass virtuoso Ralphe Armstrong(Frank Zappa, Mahavishnu Orchestra). Los Angeles based keyboardist Billy Steinway has been an integral contributor to Holz's efforts playing both live shows and recording sessions. Steinway will join Holz, Clarke and Armstrong at the upcoming recording session in September.

Additionally, Bob Holz and A Vision Forward featuring Chet Catallo and Ralphe Armstrong are getting ready to perform a show in New York City in early November 2017.

GREGORY PORTER ANNOUNCES OCT. 27 RELEASE OF "NAT KING COLE & ME"

On October 27, 2-time GRAMMY-winning vocalist Gregory Porter will release his 3rd Blue Note album, Nat King Cole & Me, a heartfelt tribute to his idol, the legendary singer, pianist and Capitol recording artist Nat King Cole. With the help of 6-time GRAMMY-winning arranger Vince Mendoza, the London Studio Orchestra, a core band featuring pianist Christian Sands, bassist Reuben Rogers, and drummer Ulysses Owens, and special guest trumpeter Terence Blanchard on two tracks, Porter revisits some of Cole's most cherished classics such as "Mona Lisa," "L-O-V-E," "Nature Boy," "The Christmas Song," and the lead track "Smile" which is available today to stream, download, or receive immediately with album pre-order.

For Porter, the influence of Cole on his life and music runs deep, a through-line that reaches back into some of his earliest childhood memories. "He was one of a kind. He left such great music - such beautiful things to listen to that you can't help but be influenced by that extraordinary timbre, style, and ultimate cool," Porter enthuses. "It's only natural that I go to the root of my inspiration and where I come from. And that root would be my mother and gospel music and Nat King Cole," Porter says.

"My mother said I wrote this little song when I was 5 and put it on a tape and played it for her when she came home from work," recalls Porter. Upon hearing it his mother, Ruth Porter, exclaimed "Boy, you sound like Nat King Cole," a compliment that sent the curious young Gregory delving into her record collection.

"I remember thinking how strange that name was, going through her records, and first seeing his image: this elegant, handsome, strong man sitting by a fire, looking like somebody's daddy. Then I put the vinyl on the player and out of those speakers came that voice, that nurturing sound. It filled a void in me. My father wasn't in my life; he wasn't raising me; he wasn't showing any interest in me. So Nat's words, ‘pick yourself up, dust yourself off, start all over again' - all of these life lessons and words of wisdom were like fatherly advice. They were coming out of the speakers like Nat was singing those words just to me. I would listen to his albums and imagine that Nat was my father."

Earlier in Porter's career - after his role in the Tony-nominated musical It Ain't Nothin' But the Blues but before rising to international acclaim as his solo artist - Porter dramatized his deep appreciation for Cole in a semi-autobiographical musical, Nat King Cole & Me, which premiered in 2004.

"That musical was a way of me trying to find my father," Porter explains. "I wrote it after my father [Rufus Porter] had passed. The musical was of Nat King Cole; and half of the music was of my original writing. But the story is how I came to Nat's music in the absence of my father. So in a way, it was some self-prescribed, self-written therapy and emotional medicine for myself."

That musical underpins Nat King Cole & Me, the follow-up to Porter's GRAMMY-winning Blue Note albums Liquid Spirit (2013) and Take Me to the Alley (2016), which established Porter as a global superstar and his generation's most soulful jazz singer-songwriter. The album will be available on the following formats: deluxe vinyl, deluxe/standard CD, deluxe/standard download, and on streaming services.

"I went about selecting the songs like I always do - first in a very emotional way," Porter says. "I just gathered the songs that meant something to me over the years. There was a period in college when I had an injury to my shoulder and I needed music to soothe me at that time. So I ended up going back to Nat's records. Then I did the same thing during the passing of my mother. In a way, there's a familiarity and a calming effect to Nat's music. Recording Nat's music was very personal because I could hear and feel my mother. And I still feel myself searching for my father."

The track listing for Nat King Cole & Me is as follows:

1. Mona Lisa (Ray Evans/Jay Livingston)
2. Smile (Charlie Chaplin/John Turner/Geoffrey Parsons)
3. Nature Boy (Eden Ahbez)
4. L-O-V-E (Milt Gabler/Bert Kaempfert)

Dee Dee Bridgewater Releases New Album Memphis...Yes, I'm Ready On September 15th Via DDB Records/OKeh Records

Inspired by Bridgewater's Return to Her Birth City of Memphis and the Exploration of Her Musical Roots and Influences

NEW YORKSept. 7, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Every picture tells a story; every journey begins differently.  The story of Dee Dee Bridgewater's stunning new album, Memphis...Yes, I'm Ready, begins in that city, where she was born at Collins Chapel Hospital, located not far from where the album was recorded at Producer Willie Mitchell's historic Royal Studios.  Dee Dee's father, a trumpet player affectionately known as "Matt the Platter Cat" was a DJ at WDIA, the top Memphisradio station, and even when the family moved to neighboring Flint, Michigan, the young Dee Deecontinued to listen to the great sounds of the Memphis music scene by tuning-in late night from across state lines.  And oh what a music scene it was!

DEE DEE BRIDGEWATER RELEASES NEW ALBUM MEMPHIS...YES, IM READY ON SEPTEMBER 15TH VIA DDB RECORDS/OKEH RECORDS

"Even as a young girl the music moved me, inspired me, made me dance with joy and cry with emotion.  My life journey may have started in MaliWest Africa, as a descendent of the Peul tribe and the Fulani of Nigeria (explored on her 2007 recording, "Red Earth" recorded in Mali) but it certainly was nurtured by my childhood in the South and all of the amazing music that I was being exposed to."

To Memphis and her roots, the 2017 NEA Jazz Master, three-time Grammy and Tony award winner, NPR host and UN Ambassador for the Food And Agriculture Organization knew that she would have to come back home to do it right.  The album was co-produced by Memphis native and Grammy-winning musician Kirk Whalum, and Willie Mitchell's grandson - Grammy-winning Engineer Lawrence "Boo" Mitchell. It was recorded at Royal Studios in Fall 2016 after multiple visits by Bridgewater to Memphis over a period of several years, during which time she absorbed as much of the music, culture, heart and soul of the city as she could possibly consume.

"Working in Memphis at Royal Studios is like magic," says Bridgewater.  "There's so much history that has been recorded in those walls.  I just felt I could take this journey in that city with Kirk and Boo.  They are my two kingpins and the two helped me realize this project and bring it to fruition."

Dee Dee was determined to recapture the same magic and history of the Blues, R&B and Soul classics in the recordings that were originally made in or associated with Memphis.  "I wanted people to be able to recall the original versions, but I also wanted them to have a more modern feeling while respecting those originals.  I'm doing B.B. King's 'Thrill Is Gone,' Bobby Blue Bland's 'Going Down Slow', Otis Redding's 'Try A Little Tenderness,' Al Green's 'Can't Get Next To You,' Ann Peebles' 'I Can't Stand The Rain' and The Staple Singers' 'Why? (Am I Treated So Bad)' - it just doesn't get any better than this in terms of material. The opportunity to make them my own was an opportunity and a challenge I felt honored to take on."

In reality, Bridgewater even prayed her project was on the right path.  She said her prayers were answered when, out of the blue, Memphis' own Stax Records singing legend Carla Thomasdropped by Royal Studios just after Dee Dee had finished mixing Thomas' hit, "B.A.B.Y."

"Being able to play 'B.A.B.Y.' for Carla and listening to her share stories about my father playing with her father, Rufus Thomas, and talking about life in Memphis in general was the final affirmation that I needed for the project…the icing on the cake."

The result of this recording is an album that sounds like Memphis and feels like Memphis but also, sounds and feels as only a Dee Dee Bridgewater album can, imbibed with her own fierce passion, originality and incredibly dynamic take on the tracks.

"I want to honor Memphis, which we call Soulsville, because it has brought joy to so many people around the world," says Bridgewater. "It has always been a part of me. The more I come back, the more at home I feel. I will eventually move back here.  Much of my heart and soul are here."

The release of Memphis...Yes, I'm Ready will be accompanied by tour dates worldwide - visit www.deedeebridgewater.com for information.  Watch Dee Dee talk about the making of the project here: Grammy, Tony Award winner Dee Dee Bridgewater returns home to Memphis to record new album.

New album for Ella Fitzgerald with the London Symphony Orchestra

A new take on the music of Ella Fitzgerald is set to be released in this, her centenary year. The album will feature Ella’s original vocals (from Verve and Decca), but now with new arrangements by the London Symphony Orchestra. Two of the tracks feature Louis Armstrong, and one has Gregory Porter duet-ing alongside the "first lady of song".

During the mixing of ‘Someone To Watch Over Me’, the producers kept hearing a noise they could not identify until one of the engineers realized it was the sound of Louis Armstrong fiddling with his trumpet valves - which they decided to leave in.

The songlist covers the period from 1950 to 1961, among them 'Misty,' 'Bewitched,' and 'Let's Call The Whole Thing Off'. It’s all released on 29 September.

Miles Davis, John Coltrane's 'Final Tour' Focus of Bootleg Series Release

John Coltrane's "final tour" as Miles Davis' sideman will be the focus of the upcoming sixth volume in Davis' Bootleg Series.

The four-disc The Final Tour: Bootleg Series Vol. 6, due out March 23rd, collects five concerts the legendary trumpeter and saxophonist performed together as part of their Spring 1960 Jazz At The Philharmonic European Tour: Two shows at Paris's L'Olympia Theater on March 21, two shows at Stockholm’s Konserthuset on March 22nd and their March 24th gig at Copenhagen's Tivolis Koncertsal.

The shows would mark the final time Coltrane served as Davis' sideman – ending a five-year tenure that bore classic LPs like 'Round About MidnightMilestones and Kind of Blue – before Coltrane embarked on his own career as bandleader. The Final Tour features many of Davis' greatest hits at the time as well as cuts of the then-new Kind of Blue.

The Final Tour concludes with an audio recording of Coltrane's 1960 radio interview with Swedish DJ Carl-Erik Lindgren. The set, authorized by both the Davis and Coltrane estates, also features in-depth liner notes courtesy of Grammy-winning music historian Ashley Kahn.

The sixth volume in the Bootleg Series is available to pre-order now in a variety of formats in addition to the digital and CD releases, including a single LP vinyl edition that spotlights the Copenhagen concert. Subscription service Vinyl Me Please will exclusively release a 2LP version that captures both Paris shows from March 21, 1960.
