Ibrahim Ferrer’s Buenos Hermanos Special Edition Reissue Coming Soon: The newly-relaunched World Circuit Records will release a new special edition reissue of original Buena Vista Social Club vocalist Ibrahim Ferrer’s Buenos Hermanos, originally released in 2003. This special edition reissue – out on February 28 on digital, CD and vinyl – was remixed and remastered by producer Ry Cooder and presents four previously unheard tracks from the album’s original recording sessions. Buenos Hermanos was hailed at the time of its original release for its varied repertoire and taking traditional Cuban music into the 21st century. It also strengthened Ferrer’s reputation as an international star and one of the most globally famous vocal interpreters of the Cuban music tradition of all time.

Shabaka and The Ancestors announce their second album

Saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings has announced that his group Shabaka and the Ancestors will make their debut on the Impulse! record label this March with their second studio album titled We Are Sent Here By History

The British jazz star, who’s won four Jazz FM Awards and is a key member of The Comet is Coming and Sons of Kemet, says this new project is “conceptualized as an album-long sonic poem examining the present and future”. With their breakout 2016 album, Wisdom of Elders, Shabaka & The Ancestors were established as a sudden force in spiritual jazz.

Recorded in Cape Town, the album explores African and Afro-Caribbean traditions with guest vocalist and performance artist Siyabonga Mthembu who composed lyrics for Shabaka to craft his music and poetry around.

The album is released on March 13th with a series of live UK dates at the beginning of May, including a performance at Propaganda: A weekend curated by Shabaka Hutchings on Sunday 10th May at Barbican Centre. Tickets are available from here.

Guitar legend Al Di Meola pays tribute to The Beatles

American jazz guitar legend Al Di Meola has announced a new album entitled ‘Across The Universe - The Beatles Vol.2’: a sophomore studio recording in tribute to The Beatles.

The album follows on from his 2013 studio recording, 'All Your Life: A Tribute to the Beatles'. His latest album adds to his vast recording collection, having released more than 30 solo albums, as well as his acclaimed collaborations with music legends including Chick Corea, John McLaughlin and Stanley Clarke.

The Grammy-winning star says he was inspired by the fab four from an early age, and here he has the opportunity to share favourite songs with what he says is “complex rhythmic syncopation combined with provocative lyrical melodies and intricate harmonies” - including Here ‘Comes the Sun’, ‘Hey Jude’ and ‘Yesterday’.

The first single ‘Strawberry Fields’ is out this week with the rest of the album to follow on March 13th.

Chris Standring, “Is There a Doctor in the House?”

Contemporary jazz guitarist Chris Standring released “Is There a Doctor in the House?,” the first single from his forthcoming album,  Real Life. This joyous song is aptly accompanied by a cheerful and charming video shot in sunny Santa Monica. Real Life is Standring’s 13th solo album; it is due out March 20 via Ultimate Vibe and promises to be one of his most effervescent records yet. “Real Life suggests a world we need to embrace without shoving things under the carpet,” the British-born musician says about the theme of the album. “This is real. Life is no rehearsal and this notion becomes ever more present the older I get. Carpe diem!”

Elsa Nilsson, “Hindsight”

Flutist/composer Elsa Nilsson’s upcoming album, Hindsight, is a direct reaction to the current political climate and reflects the urgency of her generation. Each of the pieces, including the title track presented here in a live version performed with her quartet, comes from the rhythmic structure of chants heard at Women’s Marches and is a riveting mix of rock, jazz improvisation and the compositional structure of classical music. Hindsight is due out on February 27 via Bumble Bee Collective, and each of its tracks will have an accompanying video created by an artist who has been adversely affected by the current political climate.
