Seminal acid jazz group return...

Cult UK group Galliano have laid out plans for a brand new album.

The group coalesced around a rag-tag group of clubbers in the late 80s, motivated by the conglomerate of sounds dubbed ‘acid jazz’. Jazz meets funk meets hip-hop by way of house and spoken word, Galliano matched open-ended creativity with a natty link in Gabicci knits.

Starting their journey in 1990 with ‘Welcome To The Story’ – produced by scene mover-and-shaker Chris Bangs – the release was ushered into the world by Gilles Peterson’s forward-thinking Talkin’ Loud imprint.

Reconvening in the studio, Galliano have just laid out plans for their first album in 27 years. Out on August 30th via Brownswood – itself linked to Gilles Peterson – new LP ‘Halfway Somewhere’ is available to pre-order now.

“I think the stars have to be aligned when you redo things,” says the group’s Rob Gallagher. “Coming at it from this door is very different to the door we came into back then. But once it’s existing it is something. But I’m still not sure what that something is.”

Lush new single ‘Circles Going Round The Sun’ is an emphatic return – the drums linger on an afrobeat tip, the production swirls around the improvisatory nous of jazz, while Rob Gallagher’s spoken word moves between Beat expression and dub incantation:

“The first time you dance you break boundaries between matter and spirit, self and other, individual and group…”
