This week's round-up truly contains something for everyone. First off, there's a delightful reissue of Keith Jarrett's Solo Concerts: Bremen/Lausanne, originally released half-a-century ago in 1973 and presented now in a bumper facsimile triple-vinyl edition. Next, John Metcalfe's Tree is both serene and pressing as it tackles its verdant subject. Verneri Pohjola is on top form on Monkey Mind, and Roeland Celis combines exquisitely with Ping O.D. ensemble for their electrifying record, The Vacuum. Finally, Bobby Previte & Ray Anderson communicate in an ever-delightful manner as only close friends and admirers can on Double Trouble. Recorded towards the very beginning of the master pianist’s solo legacy, these precursors to Köln showcase Jarrett’s talents from around the time he was turning 28. The results are totally engrossing and completely unlike anything that had preceded them in terms of their musical scope or the artist’s daringness to expose his vulnerability. Richly impressionistic and deeply rewarding, Jarrett's gifts will transport you. Available Format: 3 Vinyl Records This botanical release marks a shift in the work of this New Zealand-born violist, who has previously worked with Durutti Column and arranged music for the likes of Blur, U2 and Peter Gabriel. Possibly reviewing notes from his days as a student of the ‘Max-Richter-school-of-post-minimalism-and-passive-resistance’, here he presents a soothing string-filled tonic, which at once offers reverence to the almighty arbor while proposing an urgent call for climate action in the face of ecological breakdown. Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC The Finnish trumpeter has already featured as a key player on several brilliant releases from Edition Records (recently crowned Jazz Label of the Year at last week’s Presto Awards) over the past few months, so it’s about time he received his own chance to shine as leader once again. Monkey Mind is a heartfelt remedy for troubled minds, one that Pohjola takes to with a knowing gesture of intricate precision. Though largely down-tempo, the ensemble aren’t afraid of pushing the boat out when it comes to more raucous displays of energy, nor their feats of busy interchange. Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC Whilst at times perplexing, this label debut from the young Belgian guitar wizard offers fascinating insight into his vast musical upbringing and appreciation. A gifted player, Celis’ creative voice finds itself nestled comfortably within the hoard of first-rate musicians gathered to form his Ping O.D. sextet — sounding tighter than ever here as they commit to fifty minutes of pounding rhythm and drive, but not for one moment losing any of their forceful grit. Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC Ray Anderson & Bobby Previte This exquisite partnership is delightfully scheming in its craftiness and vivid disregard for convention. The solid teamwork of Anderson and Previte is built on a mutual respect and admiration, strengthened by both player's willingness to compete with their fellow musician. Though evidently aware of the ins and outs of each other’s potential and what either partner might bring to the improvisatory table, this scholarly dialogue is refreshingly keen to show off its humorous side, too.
