Artemis, 2023 ( Blue Note)

This week sees a batch of interesting releases from our favourite artists here in the jazz department. To kick things off, there's a new album from Lovano-led Trio Tapestry on ECM, whilst illustrious sextet, ARTEMIS, return (albeit with a slightly modified lineup) for their sophomore effort on Blue Note. Jazz-cellist Matthieu Saglio delivers an album of diverse musical connections on Voices, while saxophonist Tineke Postma presents a new quartet on her album, Aria. Rounding the week up comes the second instalment of DJ Paul Murphy's Jazz Room compilation series - a soundtrack to your summer that's packing some serious heat.

Our Daily Bread

Joe Lovano Trio Tapestry

“I don’t wanna just play the saxophone on top of what other people are playing… I wanna play the saxophone within what’s happening.” This quote of Lovano’s could be the perfect phrase to sum up the philosophy of Trio Tapestry, who return to ECM for their third studio release. The album’s title infiltrates the recording with prayer-like wonder, and, like a handspun yarn, these tunes unravel in a free-flowing manner that is indeterminable but somehow constant. Doubling on percussion - tuned gongs, to be precise - Lovano simultaneously performs not only with but against himself, backed by the mutual encouragement of his fellow players. Our Daily Bread features strong and stable support from pianist, Marilyn Crispell, who both shimmers and roars with fervent aplomb, and drummer, Carmen Castaldi, who is equally limber and meditative.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

In Real Time

Artemis

Something of a supergroup, Artemis represents the cream of the crop of international jazz talent. A mid-size ensemble, their sound is by all means vast and persuasive. All groundbreaking artists in their own right, the group was signed by Blue Note president Don Was in the aftermath of their performance at the Newport Jazz Festival in 2018, and has now arrived at an identity that is greater than the sum of its parts. What stands out in particular is the band’s technical prowess, in terms of their instrumental and compositional chops, alike, which capture a traditional post-bop punch with a cutting-edge freshness. The ensemble brings a particular depth to their style which, on the surface, may seem straight-ahead, but carries subtle complexities that remain expertly camouflaged beneath the stellar chemistry at play.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Aria

Tineke Postma

On her 8th album, Dutch saxophonist Postma prepares a calmly enticing palette that incorporates space through a series of delicately-constructed musical conversations. The players’ often tender feel for articulation is never lost, even on the album’s more raucous and heavier numbers. Whilst Postma herself is the only horn player on the record, from the way in which she crafts the expansion of the the vocalic timbres of her band it’s as if you can sense the collective respiration of the ensemble as a whole. Hearing guitarist Ben Monder perform on his first group outing since recently joining The Bad Plus is a real treat, too.

Available Format: CD

Voices

Matthieu Saglio

Having cherry-picked from a roster of his favourite singers from across the globe, Saglio presents this diverse musical project that unifies the sounds of many disparate world cultures. With echoes of Milton Nascimento, the range of textures from choral accompaniment to solo voice illustrates the cellist’s vision of a cultural coexistence, materialised through song. This eclectic array of traditions is matched by the inventive use of instrumentation, particularly through drummer Steve Shehan’s display of different percussive colours. On top of the strength of Saglio’s compositional voice which lies at the core of this record, the guest musicians are invited to shine throughout an album that is, at heart, a joyful adventure in artistic collaboration.

UK jazz dance hero Paul Murphy mixes past and present for the second time as he blends together clean cuts and jazz breaks for an elite setlist that would feel right at home in any club, party, or even simply over dinner. Expect latin, funk and soul grooves from this delectable buffet of summery dancefloor delights. There will be tunes that are familiar to many already, from Fela Kuti to Azymuth, but the sonic highlight has to be Laurence Mason’s Brubeck-ified cover of The Stranglers’ ‘Golden Brown’ that blew up over the first lockdown: ‘Take Vibe’.

Available Format: Vinyl Record
