The latest crop of new jazz releases includes multi-instrumentalist Sam Gendel reworking early 2000s R&B, longform improvisations from The Necks, and a new Smoke Sessions release featuring Buster Williams. You'll also find reissues and archival recordings from Paco de LucíaArchie Shepp, and Graham Collier, just to name a few. 

Sam Gendel

Jazz multi-instrumentalist (but primarily saxophonist) Sam Gendel turns his attention to millennial pop and R&B music, with reinterpretations of songs by 112, Ginuwine, Beyoncé, and Erykah Badu comprising his latest album Cookup.

D.B. Shrier Quartet

Originally a 1967 private release on Alfa Records, the eponymous D.B. Shrier Emerges is one of the only recordings of the tenor saxophonist, now remastered and expanded to bring this relatively unknown musician to a wider audience.

Graham Collier

Reissued on My Only Desire after originally being released on Fontana back in 1969, original copies of British bassist Graham Collier's Down Another Road regularly go for over £200 in used markets due to its status as one of Collier's greatest records. Pop-like melodies meet the abstract on pieces like 'Danish Blue' and the free jazz composition 'Burblings for Bob', while other tunes from Collier's songbook make lengthier appearances with extended improvisations.

Paco de Lucía

The latest in this ongoing series of archival recordings from the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival is a selection of live recordings by Spanish flamenco virtuoso Paco de Lucía, made across numerous festival appearances between 1984 and 2012.

The Necks

The latest album by Australian free improv trio The Necks - their 19th to date - is comprised of several 20-minute trio improvisations, a practice the band began doing at the start of each day; each improvisation is captured as it is in the studio, plus some light overdubs.

Buster Williams

Bassist & composer Buster Williams celebrates his eight decade of life with Unalome, his new album named after the Buddhist symbol depicted on the cover representing transcendence (Williams himself is a practicing Buddhist), playing alongside vocalist Jean Baylor, saxophonist Bruce Williams, vibraphonist Stefon Harris, pianist George Colligan, and drummer Lenny White.

Archie Shepp

The latest in this series of reissues from Charly, Yasmina, A Black Woman was originally recorded by Archie Shepp for BYG back in 1969, notable for its title track being a free jazz tune performed by an 11-piece orchestra, as well as its more hard-bop-leaning tunes with a tinge of the avant-garde.

Polobi & The Gwo Ka Masters

This new release on Real World by the enigmatic Caribbean musician Polobi and his Gwo Ka Masters associates comprises of Creole songs performed with an electro-acoustic timbre, with strong influences from the Gwo ka (lit. 'Big drum' in French Creole) tradition of Guadeloupe.

Alessio Menconi and Nigel Price

Recorded over the course of a brief UK tour in March 2022, Live at Peggy's Skylight features the meeting of two impressive jazz guitarists at Peggy's Skylight in Nottingham, playing well-known standards by Cole Porter, Wes Montgomery, and more.

Marton Juhasz, Yves Theiler, Marc Mezgolits
