SOUL TRAIN AWARD-WINNING VOCALIST
NICOLE HENRY RELEASES
TIME TO LOVE AGAIN
HER 8TH ALBUM, RELEASED ON OCTOBER 15, 2021

"Listen and you’ll hear an artist who knows how to make a song her own just as surely as she knows how to make a tune swing. Henry aims right for the emotional center…one comes
away believing that Henry is a jazz vocalist poised on the cusp of bigger things." – Billboard

On TIME TO LOVE AGAIN, vocalist NICOLE HENRY performs an eclectic mix of jazz standards and reimagined pop tunes with the sweet yet powerful voice that has made her a favorite with audiences and critics alike, around the country and the world. Stephen Holden of The New York Times ravedI had the sense of being in the presence of a pop-soul superwoman whose every gesture and inflection conveyed confidence and mastery.” BroadwayWorld says, “So powerful is her charisma, so unique is her personality, so rich is her music, so abandoned is her joy that you can't watch her without being drawn in.”

TIME TO LOVE AGAIN is Henry’s eighth CD and follows Summer Sessions (2015), So Good, So Right: Nicole Henry Live (2013), Set for the Season: Live in Japan (2011), Embraceable (2011), The Very Thought of You (2008), Teach Me Tonight (2005), and The Nearness of You (2004). Several of her albums have charted on Billboard’s and HMV Japan’s Top 10.

Henry’s live performances have garnered fans and rave reviews in over 20 countries. She has performed in New York, Tokyo, Madrid, Moscow, Paris, Shanghai, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, and Miami at major venues including Blue Note, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Blues Alley, Arsht Center, Feinstein’s, Green Mill, Jazz St. Louis, Madrid Jazz Festival, the Regattabar, and Catalina Jazz Club. In Japan, where her albums are widely distributed and she’s enjoyed much touring success, The Japan Times has said, "Nicole Henry holds an audience in the palm of her hand.” She has recorded with Kirk Whalum, Julian Lage, Gerald Clayton and Gil Goldstein and has performed with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, the Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra and Michael Feinstein.

A longtime resident of Miami, Henry assembled a top group of South Florida musicians for TIME TO LOVE AGAIN, including PETE WALLACE (piano, keyboards, organ), DOUG EMERY (organ), ERIC ENGLAND (bass), DAVE CHIVERTON (drums), AARON LEBOS (guitar), RICHARD BRAVO (percussion), TOM MCCORMICK (tenor), JOHN MICHALAK (tenor), TEDDY MULET (trumpet, trombone), JIM HACKER (trumpet), JORGE DORBAL, JR. (trombone), GREGOIRE MARET (harmonica), EDUARDO RODRIGUEZ (percussion), DAN WARNER (acoustic guitar), CAMILO VELANDIA (electric guitar), JEAN CAZE (trumpet), Grammy-nominated TROY ROBERTS (tenor), and SAMANTHA NATALIE, NIKKI KIDD, LENORA JAYE and RACHEL BROWN (background vocals).

TIME TO LOVE AGAIN is a showcase for Henry’s soulful interpretations of songs by a diverse group of iconic composers. Often favorably compared to Whitney Houston and Natalie Cole for her dynamic range, impeccable phrasing, and bluesy gospel style, Henry truly makes each song uniquely her own, whether burning through a swing tune or gently crooning a ballad.

Henry opens the album with “Feeling Good,” a standard by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse. Henry wanted the song to have a tribal feel, and the arrangement opens with just drums and shaker setting the mood and features a burning piano solo by Wallace. Henry changes gears on “Midnight at the Oasis,” made famous by Maria Muldaur in 1973. Henry’s sexy, fluid voice is accompanied by the beautiful stylings of Grammy-winning, Swiss-born harmonica player and composer Maret.

Henry says, “Like any sensible person, I’m a big fan of James Taylor,” and she sings a joyous, rousing version of Taylor’s “Your Smiling Face.” Henry first sang the Rodgers and Hart standard, “I Didn’t Know What Time It Was,” at Dizzy’s in New York City. The funky, groove-filled arrangement was written by David Cook (Taylor Swift’s musical director). Henry pays homage to Sade with “Is It a Crime,” and imbues the song with a heightened emotional deportment. Not many artists have transformed Buffy Saint-Marie songs into jazz, but Henry’s hip rendering of David Cook’s arrangement of “Until It’s Time for You to Go,” first released in 1965, brings the song into the 21st century. Henry chose to include “Wild Is the Wind” because of its sensuality, which is beautifully captured by Shedrick Mitchell’s arrangement and Troy Robert’s sensuous saxophone. It was written for a film of the same name in 1957 by Dimitri Tiomkin and Ned Washington.

Joan Armatrading’s “Love and Affection” is the only tune that features background singers. The lovely ballad especially resonated with Henry because she first heard it on a mix tape given to her by an ex-boyfriend in college. Henry closes the album with a straight-ahead version of Stevie Wonder’s “Overjoyed,” led by England’s upright bass, and she seductively captures the joie de vivre that permeates life when you are in love.
