The barnstorming Nordic jazz-prog giants return with new album, Pyramid, and UK live show in May After an absence of five years, Norwegian eight-piece Jaga Jazzist return next month with a new album Pyramid (out 24 April 2020), their debut release on their new label Brainfeeder. Made up of four extended tracks, the new album see the ensemble dive into post-rock, jazz and psychedelia with influences from 1980s jazz band Out To Lunch, Fela Kuti, synth guru Ståle Storløkken and Japanese composer Isao Tomita; to contemporaries Tame Impala, Todd Terje and Jon Hopkins. According to bandleader-composer Lars Horntveth, the album – unlike its predecessor Starfire – was recorded quickly, in just a fortnight. Retreating to a secluded woodland studio in Sweden, the group bunkered into the studio for 12-hour days. “The most important thing is that we didn’t want to over-analyse every musical idea” adds co-founder and drummer Martin Horntveth. “We wanted to follow the first and original idea and keep the freshness.”. Pyramid is Jaga Jazzist’s ninth, but first self-produced, album. Its release is preceded by a single, ‘Spiral Era’ (released online on 26 February) and will be followed up by an extensive European tour, including a prestigious date at London’s Islington Assembly Hall on 6 May.
