Dear Friendly Experiencers,

Anthony Braxton's newest release Quartet (New Haven) 2014 is now available at Firehouse 12 Records. This rapturous recording finds Anthony in the company of Taylor Ho Bynum, Nels Cline and Greg Saunier, with tracks dedicated to Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, James Brown and Merle Haggard. Rolling Stone's Hank Shteamer, in his recent in-depth interview with Anthony, describes the recording as "the sound of four world-class players relishing the chance to step away from their typical musical zones and forge a new shared language."

Anthony was also recently in the The New York Times article by Seth Colter Walls titled “Opera Lives in Cycles”, an excellent piece about the multi-opera works of Wagner, Stockhausen and Braxton. (For a glimpse of the large-format score for Anthony's next opera Trillium L, head over to Mr. Walls' earlier interview of Anthony in The New York Times.)

[Events]

On August 14th, Anthony will be performing in duo with harpist Jacqueline Kerrod at The Broad in Los Angeles. Tickets can be ordered here.

Braxton75 events are happening around the world. Please check our Braxton75 page for a complete list.
  • In the fall, Miller Theatre celebrates the 20th anniversary of its flagship Composer Portraits series with an all-Braxton program on September 25th.
  • There is an international call for research papers on the music of Anthony Braxton by the Institute for Historical Musicology of the University Hamburg, Germany. It aims to discuss different research projects concerned with Braxton’s compositional techniques as well as his instrumental- and music-philosophical thinking. The conference will take place from June 18th to 20th 2020 at the Hamburg University, Germany.
  • Tri-Centric just finished working with two youth ensembles, Face the Music and Visionary Youth Orchestra. Students learned to conduct Language Music and worked on one composition (Comp No. 151 or 255). Tri-Centric and Face the Music have already confirmed our collaboration for the coming 2019-2020 season.
  • We now have videos from the Tokyo workshops which took place in March this year. One video documents the musicians demonstrating Language Music and the other shows musicians performing Compositions 136, 56 and 254. This is the work of just two days, led by our executive director Kyoko Kitamura and Japanese composer and keyboardist Masayasu Tzboguchi. We hope to have more opportunities to collaborate with musicians around the world.
[Archive]

A major component of what makes all our activities possible, including our work with the youth ensembles and Braxton75, is our archive. In an incredible effort led by our director of publishing Carl Testa and our board president James Fei, over 160 Anthony Braxton scores have now been digitized partially or completely, and over 1600 audiovisual material has been inventoried. We will continue to digitize the approximately 400 compositions we currently have stored, and will keep on working with Anthony on his future compositions and recordings.

We are also happy to report to you that we have discovered some previously unreleased recordings by Anthony Braxton held by various institutions around the world. Please stay tuned for more information in the coming months. Searching for unreleased recordings is also part of Tri-Centric's mission.

Best wishes,
Tri-Centric Team
