Marc Hannaford playing piano with Allan Browne

One more in a series of new piano trios, this is a good one.

Fresh meat arrived Thursday - Photo: Heres another new one. An exhilarating sequel to Nova Express August 10, 2013 By The Delite Rancher VINE VOICE Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase &amp;quot;Dreamachines&amp;quot; is a follow-up to the fantastic &amp;quot;Nova Express&amp;quot; album. Much like its predecessor, this recording features two musical moods. On one hand, there is avant-garde jazz. Songs like The Wild Boys and Note Virus exemplify this bands signature sound. The flow is like a careening roller coaster that occasionally has its brakes slammed on to instantly return to full speed. It makes for a wild ride! Few musicians could handle such technically demanding arrangements, especially when played at such velocity. Psychic Conspirators may be the avant-garde standout. On the other hand, &amp;quot;Dreamachines&amp;quot; has a melodic side. For example, The Conqueror Worm is straight jazz in the style of Masada. Git-Le-Coeur is a frolic thats bookended by a dark, smoldering dreamscape. 1001 Nights In Marrakech and The Third Mind are also easy on the ears. As the melodic standout, The Dream Machine may be one of John Zorns best songs to date. Featuring a magical chord progression, the arrangement and execution has to be heard to be believed. &amp;quot;Dreamachines&amp;quot; is remarkable for both the contributions of the individual musicians and their chemistry. Given the combination of difficulty, speed and accuracy, John Medeskis spellbinding piano performance is a bit unsettling. Its as if he tapped into the supernatural to pull off such a feat. Not to be outdone, Kenny Wollesen gives one of his strongest performances. He also plays a blue streak when hes not creating a psychotropic atmosphere. On bass, Trevor Dunn holds the fort down and Joey Baron shines as usual. Even the CDs artwork is impressive. Anybody who believes that the CD has been replaced by digital downloading needs to pick-up a recent John Zorn disc. In this case, the geometric pattern on the outside slip case isnt printed, its actually cut-out. The disc is buried beneath multiple layers of mixed media art. Its as if John Zorns goal is to continually outdo his previous artwork packages. When all is said and done, the music on this album is both dangerous and sensual. It is enchanting and frightening. Put another way, &amp;quot;Dreamachines&amp;quot; is what it sounds like when jazz achieves its highest aspiration.John Zorn's Dreamachines. I'd promise to review this one if I didn't have such a hard time with reviewing instrumentals. I like it but I do have to say that after acquiring a few of John's newer stuff, there's not a lot of variation in his accessible albums, but then the music is really good so what the heck?

Photo: Taking a break from letting the randomizer do the picking and getting these EPs out of the way.
Photo: I made some fb friends in the UK thanks to a mutual interest in this band. How cool is that? https://www.facebook.com/groups/bigbigtrain/
