I can't believe I forgot about this album, but this may be just the album you're looking for. The album is called, "JACO", which came out in 1976.

It features Pat Metheny, playing very uncharacteristically, but very awesome. It's jazz-fusion, but you could look at it as 'heavy'-jazz. It also features the great Jaco Pastorious, Bruce Ditmas, and Paul Bley. I highly recommend it.

I haven't rated it, or reviewed it yet, but here's the album page. http://www.jazzmusicarchives.com/jaco-pastorius--jaco-pastorius-pat-metheny-bruce-ditmas-paul-bley.aspx
