The ECM album I would recommend from this year would be Mark Turner's 'Lathe of Heaven' - I am a huge fan of his sound.
Watched the live performance of this album in Paris and the compositions were mind-blowing. Check it out. |

ECM continues releasing vault materials which as rule are really strong (if not really unheard though). "Hamburg'72" comes from interesting for Keith Jarrett time - he just left Miles Davis fusion band and here on his new own trio's recordings (originally made for German radio) he plays something oppositely different. Trio (incl. bassist Charlie Haden and drummer Paul Motian) plays post bop from near free to almost chamber, but all sounds quite fresh especially comparing with Jarrett's later decades of chamber musicianship. It's interesting that Jarrett plays sax and wooden flute here as well. Very soon trio will be improved with saxophonist Dewey Redman to become Jarrett's best ever formation - so-called "American Quartet".
Sound quality is a bit unusual for ECM - sound is clear (cleared?),but mix is freaky - with lot of cymbals filling all the space on the front,and a bit flat in whole. Plus you can hear some listeners noises time to time (angry Keith screams are already tradition so its don't count). Same material (even in more complete form) has been already released on "Live In Hamburg" CD in 2008 (Jazz Lips JL761), but it looks it was unauthorized release, so formally "Hamburg'72" is a premiere. Similarly to any previous Tunisian oud player Anouar Brahem's album,his new double release "Souvenance" contains very limited amount of jazz. Main difference is if previously he played well done world music with touch of improvisation added as spices to make good dish a bit more delicious, here he plays well composed,tuneful chamber music with touch of Eastern exotic. In both cases his music didn't contain groove (what isn't a bad surprise for many ECM sound connoisseurs) and contains very limited improvisational moments. For those who doesn't care much about such formalities, this double CD set contains lot of tuneful instrumental music ,tastefully prepared. For jazz fans here are a few really jazzy pieces as well. ECM opens new 2015 year with American sax player Chis Potter album "Imaginary Cities" - well composed music containing suite and some beautiful well orchestrated tunes,recorded with larger combo (incl. two bassists and Craig Taborn on piano among others). Music by its atmosphere fits well for Christmas season, vibes/marimba sounds and whole atmosphere are like coming from fairy tells. Quite muscular and groovy rhythm section adds lot of life,still Potter sax playing is extra safe and in moments reminds Jan Garbarek world/new age-influenced ECM recordings. Nice but extremely safe music

Agreed. This is great, but we've heard him do even better than this. My favourite of his remains 'Lift - Live at the Village Vanguard'. One of my favourite rhythm sections to date.

A bit unusual for nowadays ECM release - Jack DeJohnette live album "Made In Chicago", recorded during 2013 Jazz Fest. All-star band,incl. Roscoe Mitchell,Henry Threadgill, Muhal Richard Abrams and Chicagoan bassist Larry Gray try to revitalize the atmosphere of Art Ensemble Of Chicago gigs, with only partial success.

One of three leading modern jazz pianists on my list (among Matthew Shipp and Craig Taborn), Vijay Iyer is a bit different story. If Shipp and Taborn both are part of New York avant-garde scene for years, Iyer started as post-bop pianist and became popular with series of his Indian music influenced albums. World fusion and contemporary chamber jazz were both his visit card in Europe for decade. Last year he debuted on ECM with very unusual project - as suite for keyboards and string quartet composer, far not every his previous music fan accepted this change.
"Break Stuff" is Iyer's second ECM release, this time it's jazz - tuneful and adventurous, mixing his previous experiences all in one ( leaving aside Indian influences though).Vijay old trio plays very modern music, quite traditional compositions sound very unorthodox, in moments drummer sounds as hip-hop star. German bassist Eberhard Weber who's music has been almost synonym of ECM sound on some previous decades rarely presents surprises (most probably his fans like him because of that). His new album "Encore" contains 13 bass solos,originally recorded between 1990 and 2007 on different locations around Europe. In probably most sound today's French Studios La Buissonne this material was edited and over-recorded by Dutch flugelhorn player Ack van Rooyen minimalist improvs. Generally, this album just continues quite successful Weber "Résumé" album's formula (released in 2012).
The result is what one can expect from such project - jazz spontaneity and playfulness is generally lost, instead there are lot of melancholic tunes and atmospheric moods,each of them separately taken is quite nice if too static, but them all in one place are obviously directionless. Canadian reedest Kenny Wheeler (who lived in UK from early 50s though) last album, recorded in late 2013 and released already posthumously (Wheeler passed away in September'14) doesn't contain surprises - it's melancholic well made mainstream jazz (somewhere between hard bop and post bop), a bit old-fashioned but somehow it fits well in this case. Surprisingly for ECM warm and emotionally colored music.

Young Danish guitarist Jakob Bro ECM debut is titled by Nordic goddess Gefion name. As on almost any of his previous albums, main music attraction is his collaborators (he already recorded quite a lot albums and full list of musical partners is "who is who in jazz"). Here on "Gefion" Bro leads acoustic trio with American bassist and Thomas Morgan and Norwegian veteran drummer Jon Christensen.

Swedish acoustic bassist Anders Jormin-led trio with his co-patriot vocalist and fiddle/viola player Lena Willemark and Japanese 25-string koto player Karin Nakagawa on "Trees Of Light" present quite unusually sounding combination of Japanese classic koto and North European ethno-music (with Lena Willemark singing poems on her native Alvdals dialect). Surprisingly organic ethno-chamber-improvisation.

Italian pianist Giovanni Guidi led trio plays very warm,soulful and slightly sentimental music sounding very chamber, only double bassist Thomas Morgan's groovy playing adds some jazzy feel here. Still,different from more usual Central European chamber jazz, Guidi trio sounds less formal,far not so cold and concentrates not on playing precise techniques but on feelings,characterful for East European musicians (or even Chopin music).

Sardinia-born trumpeter Paolo Fresu duo with Italian bandoneonist Daniele di Bonaventura sounds right as one can expect - Mediterranean slightly sentimental relaxed, in moments even lazy jazzy folklore. Oppositely to traditional ECM recordings (or Nordic "ECM sound") sound is extremely warm, even for ECM Udine studio recordings. Not the first duo album and no surprises here - an album for such music fans.

Tim Berne third album for ECM is a live one - first concert recordings with his Snakeoil band. Berne's ECM music wasn't accepted by all his old fans, some saw him "selling away" working for major label. I can't agree - his early decades of noisy creative rebellion were great but "you can't do it on stage anymore". Starting collaboration with German label Tim found new sound combining his New York avant-garde creativity with refinement of European chamber tradition. On his live album music sounds only a bit lively comparing with studio recordings but it's enough for hearing some new nuances here.Classic band's line-up is expanded adding guitarist Ryan Ferreira,so expect new sound as well. Great album, as everything what Snakeoil recorded till now.
