ECM opens the year 2017 with their home guitarist John Abercrombie quartet album. Abercrombie started his career as fusion musician, but after he worked for ECM for some decades developing his chamber guitar jazz. New album is recorded by the same all-star quartet as his previous one ("39 Steps") so it's not strange that music isn't all that different. ECM recordings fan will find a collection of Abercrombie / pianist Marc Copland originals plus Miles Davis "Nardis". Music here is relaxed, never too fast - kind of chamber guitar balladry, not all that polished as it was during 80s and 90s, but absolutely safe in label tradition. Guitarist fans most probably will like it, others will hardly find any new arguments for such love though. Anyway - quality jazz as almost everything what is released on ECM label.

For his new release on ECM, renown pianist Craig Taborn recorded a collection of well-composed songs leading a an acoustic quartet with reedist Chris Speed, bassist Chris Lightcap and Bad Plus-drummer Dave King. Well-cooked mix of post-bop, Latin,avant-garde jazz and modern composition played by skilled band - probably one of very first jazz albums, released this year with ambition to reach year's best list.

Real rarity for the label - vocalist album!  German singer Theo Bleckmann's new album contains nice composed songs with jazzy arrangements with rock/ambient ( Mike Oldfield?) and chamber strong influences. Strong band includes star drummer John Hollenbeck, guitarist Ben Monder, keyboardist Shai Maestro and bassist Chris Tordini. Fits surprisingly well with ECM aesthetics

Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko is one of the most popular European jazz musicians of today, and with no doubt ECM label biggest star. His new album, recorded with same New York Quartet as "Wislawa" (Cuban pianist David Virelles, drummer extraordinaire Gerald Cleaver and new double bassist Reuben Rogers from Virgin Islands instead of former Thomas Morgan), contains his trade mark slightly melancholic European chamber jazz recorded under ECM sound standard. More "Wislawa" than let say "Polin", this album will attract Stanko's regular fans for sure.
