ECM opens new 2015 year with American sax player Chis Potter album "Imaginary Cities" - well composed music containing suite and some beautiful well orchestrated tunes, recorded with larger combo (incl. two bassists and Craig Taborn on piano among others). Music by its atmosphere fits well for Christmas season, vibes/marimba sounds and whole atmosphere are like coming from fairy tells. Quite muscular and groovy rhythm section adds lot of life, still Potter sax playing is extra safe and in moments reminds Jan Garbarek world/new age-influenced ECM recordings. Nice but extremely safe music

Similarly to any previous Tunisian oud player Anouar Brahem's album, his new double release "Souvenance" contains very limited amount of jazz. Main difference is if previously he played well done world music with touch of improvisation added as spices to make good dish a bit more delicious, here he plays well composed, tuneful chamber music with touch of Eastern exotic. In both cases his music didn't contain groove (what isn't a bad surprise for many ECM sound connoisseurs) and contains very limited improvisational moments. For those who doesn't care much about such formalities, this double CD set contains lot of tuneful instrumental music ,tastefully prepared. For jazz fans here are a few really jazzy pieces as well. You decide
The concert premiere of the album's material has been presented last week (December 4) at Munich's Prinzregententheater, where Brahem's Quartet has been joined by the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra(Estonia) Edited by snobb - 09 Dec 2014 at 6:22am |

ECM continues releasing vault materials which as rule are really strong (if not really unheard though). "Hamburg'72" comes from interesting for Keith Jarrett time - he just left Miles Davis fusion band and here on his new own trio's recordings (originally made for German radio) he plays something oppositely different. Trio (incl. bassist Charlie Haden and drummer Paul Motian) plays post bop from near free to almost chamber, but all sounds quite fresh especially comparing with Jarrett's later decades of chamber musicianship. It's interesting that Jarrett plays sax and wooden flute here as well. Very soon trio will be improved with saxophonist Dewey Redman to become Jarrett's best ever formation - so-called "American Quartet".
Sound quality is a bit unusual for ECM - sound is clear (cleared?),but mix is freaky - with lot of cymbals filling all the space on the front, and a bit flat in whole. Plus you can hear some listeners noises time to time (angry Keith screams are already tradition so its don't count). Same material (even in more complete form) has been already released on "Live In Hamburg" CD in 2008 (Jazz Lips JL761), but it looks it was unauthorized release, so formally "Hamburg'72" is a premiere. Far not as good as best "American Quartet" albums, this one has its moments listen here: Edited by snobb - 05 Dec 2014 at 2:13am |

The ECM album I would recommend from this year would be Mark Turner's 'Lathe of Heaven' - I am a huge fan of his sound.
Watched the live performance of this album in Paris and the compositions were mind-blowing. Check it out. |

Another related new ECM release is this year's Jacob Young album, where Marcin Trio plays in whole on support. It looks they are on the top of the wave now
Roughly (and very simplifying) ECM had their Jan Garbarek-era, than Tomasz Stanko-era, what we see now is post Tomasz Stanko

I see there is current ECM star sax player Mark Turner playing on Harrell's Trip . His new album is quite nice (ECM release, just few steps above). BTW he played here in my hometown last Friday, didn't see him though

Yes, My first album I bought quite a few years ago was "Leosia" and then "From The Greenhill" and the "Soul Of Things" followed. Lost me a bit with his next two "Suspended Night" and "Lontano". Didn't think they were as interesting. Have not heard his newest yet all the same. What has been growing on me this year is Tom Harrell's "Trip" not ECM but good. Both of them are fabulous on trumpet.

Cuban pianist and current Tomasz Stanko New York Quartet member David Virelles third album (and his debut on ECM) is both some fresh air in refreshing label program and step forward in artist career. Non-orthodox quintet (David's piano is supported by two acoustic bassists and two percussionists) demonstrate excellent example of "new Latin" jazz - still based on emotionally colored tunes and musicianship more than on virtuosity, this music is heavily influenced by ECM-type clear chamber sound and quite free,in moments on dissonant border, improvisations more usual for adventurous avant-garde musicians. The result is great - what looks like mish-mash on paper, in a form of real music sounds as very interesting new sound, giving to Latin jazz tradition a new life.

Sax man Mark Turner with his quartet (incl. Israeli trumpeter Avishai Cohen among others) on his new ECM album presents that category of music, which is probably best today's ECM label can offer. Obviously chamber sound is still groovy enough to be separated from some "new-agey" lifeless ECM releases, it's obviously post-bop rooted but without feelable hard bop or blues influence, and quite often it sounds free enough to reach borderline with avant-garde jazz. This music is minimalist, accessible, tuneful, Turner's sax is liquid and long-soloing.
More accessible than ECM New York avant-garde jazz releases (Tim Berne, Michael Formanek, etc), Turner's music is enough interesting and non-conformist to be attractive for wide category of listeners. listen here: Edited by snobb - 27 Sep 2014 at 3:19pm |

Clarinetist Louis Sclavis is ECM label's "French voice". His tenth album on this label is tuneful, deeply rooted in European chamber music, almost melancholic in places and warm uncharacteristically for ECM recordings (recorded in French renowned Studio La Buissonne near Avignon). Main surprise here is addition of Iranian classical percussionist Kevyan Chemirani to Clavis regular band. Central Asian classic tradition surprisingly well fits to advanced European chamber jazz, resulting music doesn't become variation of world fusion but represents something what could be tagged as "Eurasian chamber jazz". One among ECM most interesting this year's releases

Karen Mantler is not true jazz singer (or jazz pianist). She got strong jazz gene from her both parents though - everyone knows who Carla Bley and Michael Mantler are.
Karen released her first album in 14 yrs, and it looks she isn't a girl trying to look as her mum anymore.... During time of musical inactivity (to be correct she participated on some Carla and Michael albums and was a part of some lesser known musical projects) she played accordion on the streets and served coffee; her new minimalist songs sound as she knows what she's singing about. New album released on Carla's own Xtra WATT label, sub-divison of ECM listen here: Edited by snobb - 29 May 2015 at 3:29am |

Austrian acoustic guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel is playing around his home country and Central Europe for years, last year he debuted on ECM as collaborator playing with Ralph Towner. "Driftwood" is Wolfgang label debut album, acoustic trio with bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Brian Blade.Obviously influenced by Towner's music, Wolfgang plays aerial down-tempo dreamy music, often lyrical,in moments warm and with feel-able European chamber tradition. It sounds quite nice, but are not enough essential and somewhere in the middle of the album the listener feels like he listens same long song, not beautiful enough to continue such a long time.

Second Charlie Haden and Keith Jarrett duets album (after cool jazz reinvented "Jasmine" from 2010) is recorded in similar key - standards ,played by duo in quite unusual (especially for Jarrett) warm, even lyrical manner.A few surprises but another joy for such music lovers.

Polish Simple Acoustic Trio started playing refined European post bop two decades ago and after glorious days on domestic market in 2004 signed contract with ECM becaming Marcin Wasilewski Trio (and adapting their sound for ECM standard). After 3 ECM albums they co-operates here on new ECM album with two Norwegians - Jim Hall and John Abercrombie former student guitarist Jacob Young and sax player Trygve Seim.
With Jacob Young as leader the quintet plays contemporary European jazz mixing Polish soulful tradition and Nordic relaxed chamber sound. Warmer than regular ECM music, this album is really nice release for genre funs. listen here: Edited by snobb - 27 Sep 2014 at 3:03pm |

Avant-garde jazz of 60s and 70s legend, Paul Bley stayed an influential piano player for decades. His most current series of albums on ECM step close to European chamber jazz, but still save some adventuress, unusual time signatures and dissonant sound.
His most current solo piano concert in Norway, just released on ECM, is not much different: being same size scene figure as Keith Jarrett, Bley solo albums always have some things to offer for such music fans. Mostly down tempo and bluesy-rooted, "Play Blue" still contains some doze of adventuress making it a bit more than just chamber jazz release. listen here: Edited by snobb - 29 May 2015 at 3:28am |

I think the problem with a lot of the fusion music is that it's extremely predictable, it's a rock rhythm and the solos all play the same stuff and they play it over and over again ...
