Bill Frisell Scores First No. 1 on Jazz Albums Chart With 'Music IS'Guitarist Bill Frisell notches his first No. 1 on the Jazz Albums chart, as his latest release, Music IS, bows atop the tally dated March 31. It also starts atop the Contemporary Jazz Albums list, marking his fourth leader on that tally, and his third in-a-row. The new album -- which was released on March 16 via Songtone/Okeh/Sony Masterworks -- sold a little over 1,000 copies in the week ending March 22, according to Nielsen Music. The 24-year-old Jazz Albums chart ranks the top selling contemporary and traditional jazz albums of the week in the U.S. Those two sub-categories of jazz are also represented, respectively, on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Albums and Traditional Jazz Albums charts. The former launched in 1987, while the latter list started in 1967. Frisell has claimed 34 entries on the Jazz Albums chart, dating back to his first appearance on the tally, with 1996’s Falling Off the Roof -- with the Ginger Baker Trio and Charlie Haden. In total, Frisell has racked up 13 top 10s on the list, including Music IS. On the Contemporary Jazz Albums ranking, Frisell previously led the list with: When You Wish Upon a Star (2016), Guitar in the Space Age! (2014) and All We Are Saying… (2012). from www.billboard.com Edited by snobb - 31 Mar 2018 at 6:18am |
