international festival

Due to the coronavirus epidemic, we were forced to postpone our
Jazz Cerkno anniversary edition –
already its 25th
– from May to September. This year, the festival will take place
between 17 and 19 September, in accordance with the strict health
measures of the National Institute of Public Health, that is taking into
account the distance between visitors. Since with these measures far
less than 100 listeners could listen to the festival at the traditional
venue Stari plac, we decided to
move the festival to a new location: the parking lot at the old ETA factory,
where there is room for more jazz fans. However, the number of tickets
is very limited. Similar to Stari plac, the new venue, which is only a
few minutes' walk away from the previous, will be under a tent; the same
applies to the catering part of the venue.
The program of the 25th edition of the festival – although created in a
changed and, due to the limitation of international travel, especially
hard circumstances – remains the same, meaning that the number of
performing bands and their quality does not differ from previous years…
We will hear
ten international and Slovenian bands, and all
six international bands will play their
premiere Slovenian concert
in Cerkno! As we like it in Cerkno, we will be listening to modern jazz
and other inventive music that combine jazz with other genres, from
avant-garde classical to American folk and blues music, to electronics
and noise. In addition to the main program, the organizers have prepared
a rich accompanying program, which will include a photo exhibition,
additional concerts, workshops and a round table.
As this year the festival celebrates its 25th birthday, it is more than appropriate to start it in a big style. The
RTV Slovenia Big Band and
Kristijan Krajnčan aka
DrummingCellist
will take care of this. DrummingCellist is the Krajnčan's project, in
which he plays simultaneously cello and drums, cleverly combining
classical music, jazz, experiment and electronics. The big band will be
conducted by
Lojze Krajnčan (Kristijan's father), who has been the conductor of the big band for 30 years; the guests will be guitarist
Jani Moder,
Petra Vidmar on classical percussion and
Vid Ušeničnik on percussion.
After the big band concert, we will continue the first day of the
festival with the premiere Slovenian performance of the
Slovenian-Italian
Ombak Trio, in which cellist
Giovanni Maier and drummer
Stefano Giust will play alongside saxophonist
Cene Resnik. The trio will present inspired and spirited music from this year’s debut
Through Eons to Now. The first festival day will be concluded by the Italian band
Silvia Bolognesi Young Shouts; the quartet led by double bassist
Silvia Bolognesi plays her original compositions inspired by the life and work of Black American folk and gospel singer Bessie Jones.
Another international trio will perform for the first time in Slovenia –
Mopcut,
which brings together musicians from the USA, Austria and France. The
music of the trio is a powerful and striking blend of improvisation,
experimental electronics and noise. The trio will close the Friday's
festival day, which will be started by another local ensemble, the
Ground Rituals quartet, which consists of established Slovenian jazz musicians of several generations: guitarist
Jani Moder, drummer
Zlatko Kaučič, trumpet player
Igor Matković and double bassist
Jošt Drašler.
The concert will be recorded and released as their debut. The concert
of the local quartet, which “draws inspiration from the subconscious and
nature” in research and music creation, will be followed by the
premiere performance of the Swedish-Austrian tandem
Falling. It comprises of
Mats Gustafsson and
Christof Kurzmann,
who use a combination of voice and acoustic and electronic instruments
to create a mixture of improvised and electroacoustic music, noise, free
jazz, contemporary music, rock and more.
Saturday is traditionally the most eventful, as there will be a lot of
events from the accompanying program, and this time Saturday's schedule
also brings some changes regarding the venues. There will be no concerts
at the Music School this year; performance of the band
Tobija Hudnik Equilibrium as Insta_bility within the
Young Researchers III.
program will be broadcast at 5 pm via festival Youtube and Facebook
channels. There will be two concerts in front of the Cerkno Hotel. At 11
am we will listen to a children's concert entitled
J.C.T., performed together with
Boštjan Gombač, Blaž Celarec and Žiga Golob. At the same venue, but on Friday at 5.30 pm, there will be a concert by the local
Kar Češ Brass Band.
Both concerts will be free; the number of tickets is limited. In case
of bad weather, the concerts will be on the main stage. At the main
stage, there will also be the presentation of sound installation,
created at the
Cerkno Sound Safari workshop led by
Boštjan Perovšek.
A round table / podcast of
Nova Muska magazine entitled
“Live Music During The Corona”
will take place in front of the hotel on Saturday at noon. During the
festival and until 31 December, the Gabrijel bar will host the
exhibition by
Nada Žgank, our long-time official
photographer, who will present a selection of photographs from previous
editions of the festival. The schedule of accompanying events will be
rounded off by
Dario Cortese with his traditional workshop
“Wild Food During Jazztime”.
Saturday evening will bring the finals of this year's festival
anniversary edition. It will start at 7 pm with the screening of a video
by the Slovenian band
Container Doxa, which connects jazz with electronics, improvisation and visual arts. The Austrian-American duo
Ingrid Schmoliner / Hamid Drake
will perform for the first time in Slovenia at 8 pm; the pianist and
percussionist play a suggestive blend of avant-garde classical music,
jazz, traditional music and improvisation. This will be followed by a
concert by the international ensemble
Koma Saxo 4 under the direction of Swedish double bassist
Petter Eldh,
who wrote sparkling, rhythmically playful, energetic and sometimes
celebratory sounding music for the ensemble, which will have its
Slovenian premiere at the Jazz Cerkno festival. The local septet
Oholo!,
in which some of the most prominent protagonists of the Slovenian jazz
and impro scene play, will provide a great conclusion with a striking
mixture of old and new jazz, African music and improvisation.
You are invited to the 25th anniversary edition of the Jazz Cerkno
festival, which will take place between 17 and 19 September, this time
not at Stari plac, but in the parking lot at the old ETA factory and
other locations. As always, Hotel Cerkno offers
favourable jazz packages to our visitors, and the tickets are available from September 1 on
mojekarte.si.
The organizers additionally stress that the number of tickets is very
limited and that the seating order will apply at the venue.
Jazz Cerkno at a new location on the new date from 17 to 19 September, but with a proven set of new jazz and daring new music!
