Checking out a new nu jazz release cab be an iffy prospect, sometimes you get too much nu and not enough jazz. Not so with Contemporary Noise Sextet, they have enough modern touches to join the in crowd, but they also don’t forget to bring the serious jazz too. The Sextet features a two horn front line that sounds much bigger than just two that helps give the band a mini jazz orchestra sound. John Coltrane’s modal jazz is a big influence on here, as well Sun Ra’s African grooves, Don Ellis’ 60s hippie big band innovations and the early horn led version of Soft Machine. To all this they add the slight space rock and exotic lounge touches we expect with some nu jazz bands, but it’s the jazz instrumental skills that stick with you the most with this band.

Unlike a lot of newer bands, Sextet plays their instruments with the confident abandon of true jazz masters. You can't beat the sound of proven veterans and the inner strength and subtle creativity they can bring to the music. Saxophonist Tomek Glazik has a powerful sound on tenor and baritone and guitarist Kamil Patar plays great snarly urban guitar solos in a style similar to Vernon Reid. If you like horn driven modal jazz with some nice modern touches, this disc is highly recommended
